great songs ruined by ads

shhh  said about 2 years ago  or at  12:59AM on Saturday, September 23 2006.

wonderful world - sam cooke (was it used by toyota?)

wouldn't it be nice - beach boys (cadbury ad)

the de de de decore ad - [sorry, don't know the details, something 'prince'??] (i'm sure that would have been a good song in it's time though)

what else?

i did notice lisa miller on the racv ad the other night too - that was pretty amusing! i hope she got a big fat check for it!

AC/DC - Fords

which song empra?

I think Modest Mouse's Gravity Rides Everything was used by Nissan. though this acted as a sort of culture jam on the company itself: 'as fruit drops, as flesh it sags, everything thing will fall, fall right into place'. way to admit your car's going to fall apart idiots ...

Thunderstruck

Le Tigre's Deceptacon was ruined by a shitty shamppo ad. Children of the Revolution is hideously covered on a new Toyota ad.

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

they used madness' 'it must be love' on a baby ad of some description, only a way crappy re-record

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

oh yeah, i remember those - i quite liked them too - from memory they were quite tasteful

and can anyone help me with the decore ad? it's driving me nuts - like a 50's male vocal thing and i'm sure there was a 'prince' in it somewhere, either in the song title or in the artist name.

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

louis the fly was a rip-off of something as well wasn't it?

cos my mum knew the 'apple of his mother's eye' line

so often i have found (years later) that the original versions of these are really great songs!

empra  said about 2 years ago:

i'm sure lotto wrecked house of fun by madness too....

montyclift  said about 2 years ago:

de-de-de-decore...

based on drifters...king of fools...maybe...hang on, gooogling...

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

or is it "*duke8 of" something... ?

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

no i mean duke of ...

drugshakehands  said about 2 years ago:

'counting the beat' on the k-mart commercials. i loved that song until those advertisements.

empra  said about 2 years ago:

'Love This City' by The Whitlams used for the Mackay City Council ads

montyclift  said about 2 years ago:

duke of earl....

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

duke of earl! there's nothing a determined google search can't solve.

according to wikipedia:

gene chandler is the writer

interestingly it also notes that the chili peppers used to do a live version

and the word "Duke" is said approximately 125 times during the entire song.

not sure if it's a great song or not but i am certain it was ruined by the decore ad

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

thanks 'clift, am also proud to say i worked it out before your post - thanks though

I quite liked Don't Panic by Coldplay 'til Ten got their hands on it, up until then it was the only single off that album that hadn't been played into the ground.

However, I think the biggest offender has to be Prime with The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town.

that fucking awful remake of revolution on the holden ads.

Can't listen to Movin' On Up by Primal Scream since it became the sound I'd hear when my Telewest digibox crashed and rebooted - often for an hour rather than the show I thought I was taping

Lucretia MacEvil  said about 2 years ago:

Ooh. I used to like to wag my wobbly bits to Chicken Payback by The Bees. But then some adverwanker turned it into a car-mercial.

It's Mac Time Now by Rebecca's Empire.

ctrlshift  said about 2 years ago:

that's my team

wouldn't it be nice if the word were cadbury

madcans  said about 2 years ago:

just as annoying is when they are used as tv theme songs. eg: getting so much better (the beatles) - better homes and gardens
we used to be friends (dandy warhols) - veronica mars

and so on..

madcans  said about 2 years ago:
  • getting better

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

i saw one last night, possibly for some baby product, that had a heinous rendition of 'time after time'

goingblank  said about 2 years ago:

No way! We Used to Be Friends use on Veronica Mars has actually made me like that song!

Speaking of theme songs, that cover of How Soon is Now that was the Charmed theme...

Pelt and Holler  said about 2 years ago:

i heard it through the grape vine - sultana bran - sultanas on the grapevine. it REALLY REALLY fucking angers me!!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 2 years ago:

it seems the craft of jingle writing is kinda lost

i mean, it's too easy now eh? ...just use someone else's song and bastardise it in the process!

give us some jingles!

good ones.

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

"come in and see the good good guys" to the tune of 'good vibrations'

c*s!

meg  said about 2 years ago:

they recently used the beatles for a car commercial with other people singing it and there's a joanna newsome song for the city of melbourne ads. But actually the ads look alright.

However if not for a peugeot ad i may never have heard Simian.

shhh  said about 2 years ago:

yes, feel free to include good ones. some positive experiences in this thread could help to reduce the pain of all the bad ones.

seamonkeydisco  said about 2 years ago:
