According to a source close to EMI the new John Cale album Live Circus is now delayed until the new year. No further information about a exact release date.
IU'd love to see him again...but with a band this time...while I loved the show five years back...it was exactly the same as the one at the national theatre in the early 90's...it'd be great to see him with a band behind him.
Current band is very hard, guitar based
Cale's mainly playing guitar.
That live LP is of the recent shows.
Awsome. Look forward to it.
He plays electric viola for ViF of course....

CHURCH OF ANTHRAX.
Got a great cd of a 70's show..I think it's called guts. Fuck, it's an intense show.
Cale hasn't done shows with a band for years.
He's been solo since the late 70s-early 80s.
But it's something I really wanna see.
the reports from the live shows in the 1970s are fantastic.
I wonder if Cale is playing Ready for War again.
all his violent 70s stuff is just right again for these times.

Fabulous. The arrangements for 'Paris 1919' were great. His band rocked.
Second half was great too.
Setlist and more info (link to pics in the comments) here.
I really loved the Paris 1919 set, but the guitarist was a little too wanky for my liking.
I was very disappointed by this gig.
Much of what makes the album so great is the restraint and subtlety. Translating all the acoustic guitar parts to a cheesy sounding electric piano was criminal. Andalusia in particular.
While the orchestra played well, the orchestral arrangements were often unnecessary and over the top. And the sound sucked balls. The first and second violinists were playing through D.I.s and I don't think anyone else was mic'ed up. The result was a scratchy harsh sound. Truly bad.
And to paraphrase rawr, yes, his lead guitarist was like one of the guys that works in Allan's. All noodle and wank and bad pedal tone.
He didn't even play 'Cocaine'!
Yeah or that one that's all silence. Ripped off!
Also why was his hair pink?
Although I enjoyed the Paris 1919 set (how could you go wrong with such beautiful songs) I thought it seemed a bit rigid. The second half was a lot better when they were able to rock out. I'd love to know what some of those songs were as there were a few I didn't recognise.
How cool was the medley of Gun and Pablo Picasso?
I think the first song of the second set was off Vintage Violence, his first solo album. Maybe I'll have a listen to it tomorrow and come up with a name.
I thought there were some really brilliant songs and some really flat songs. Half Past France and Hedda Gabler were absolutely brilliant.
And yes the Gun/Pablo Picasso medley was great.
john cale would never do a shitty, spoken word collab with metallica.
God bless you, Jose Jones - bang on.
They totally deserve each other. Total cunts.
where should I start with cale's solo stuff? i'm very much digging the white light/white heat era velvets and modern lovers album, is there any thing he produced with this vibe?
John Cale said that Dr Dre is one of his influence. Ha!
Paris 1919 (Reprise) March 1973
Fear (Island) September 1974
Slow Dazzle (Island) March 1975
Helen Of Troy (Island) 1975 & Animal Justice (EP) (Illegal Records) 1977 are great too.
thanks gang.
anything to avoid?
Yeah, Metallica and Lou Reed.
Don't forget Vintage Violence his first album which has some beautiful stuff on it (Amsterdam is my favourite Cale song) and his collaboration with Terry Riley Church of Anthrax, both are pretty easy to find on CD and LP. Music for a New Society is quite brilliant although it's a bit of a tough listen.
In terms of what to avoid, well I'm sure all of his albums have their fans, but for my money I would avoid The Academy in Peril, Honi Soit and Carribean Sunset.
His other collabs are good too, 'Songs for Drella' with Reed and 'Wrong Way Up' with Eno (it's not my fav Eno collab, but surely interesting!).
I endorse jose's suggestions, personally. Cale's solo stuff is essentially pretty different to his production work, most of the time - his most celebrated solo stuff is more like weird queasy piano-based ballads, which I'm a-okay with.
Sabotage/Live is his loudest angriest record, a live one from 1979 with young punks as his backing band - you may well dig that if you're after White Light/White Heat type stuff?
