Sure fire way to get rid of hiccups??

Had them all day. Tried the drinking upside down and holding breath things. No joy.

Help!

Really slow deep controlled breathing excercises works every time, fias. Also good for forum rage.

I like the shot of red cordial idea. Mainly because I like red cordial.

yeah, the drinking backwards usually works for me. you have to keep going, and do the glass all in one skull.

and if that doesn't work, try it again with a bigger glass.

Drink a fizzy drink like coke (or beer), anything to make you burp.
This will relax your diaphragm, which should stop the hiccups.

  • stand up
  • take a big mouthful of water but dont swallow it
  • put your chin against your chest so you are looking at your feet
  • swallow the water as slowly as you can

I drink backwards from a glass really slowly. I reckon it's got somwthing to do with holding your breath and just tricking the muscles (that's right - when they're not watching)

Poprocks- yes, I also swear by that one, but with a slight alteration by breathing out really really slowly at the end instead of just holding breath.

It does look funny at the pub though. Especially if there is two people involved- one demonstrating to the patient.

1 straw
1 large cup of water

stick yr fingers in yr ears and in yr nose. yes it's possible. drink entire glass of water, not too fast

hiccups gone

actually after discussion with my offsider here in the office, she says you should put yr thumbs in yr ears and yr forefingers on yr nose, then drink through the straw

You press underneath the chinbones on their corners, it stimulates seratonin and also drops pressure on the gullet. Works every time.

take a deep breath. hold it. don't breathe out. take some more air in. don't breathe out. take some more air in. hold it as long as you can. then when you can't hold it any more, let out the breath as slowly as you can. works every time.

Take a mouthful of water and hold it. Put your fingers in your ears. Swallow the water.

Once again, I have no idea whether it works.

after over 30minutes of the 'cups, i went for a walk, which turned out to get rid of them in this case. maybe i just needed to move around and distract myself.

having said that, i always get them more than once in a day, so i am sure i will have ample time to try the above methods again later...

MountainMan told me about that cure for the hiccup many years ago and it works every single time. I have even converted people. He should be nominated for a prize.
