ALICE IN WONDERLAND

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago  or at  12:06PM on Tuesday, September 12 2006 in books

I'm a huge fan of this story. I watch the Disney cartoon once a week without fail. So wrong for a children’s tale. The whole tea party scene is classic, I got in deep conversation with my mum about it on the weekend and came to the conclusion that it's like this.
The MAD HATER, Is human, And he's mad. You can't keep his attention for more then 10 secs before he's off on another tangent about nonsense tripe.
Then you've got the Hare, A less pure version of the royal WHITE RABBIT, a dirty rabbit if you will, who is also mad.
Then there is the mouse that can't talk at all and looks off its face, because..... It lives in a tea pot. They're all on Mushrooms, and are drinking mushroom tea, which sends then crazy and that’s why Alice can't make any sense of them. Anywho, not the first to come up with that I'm sure.
But also the end of the story where Alice see's her self through a key hole/ door (Door of perception?) and is yelling at her self “Wake up Alice!" Kinda like trying to snap your self out of a bad trip.
Apparently there is an exacerbation of art inspired by the book on at the moment. Any one know when and were?

i love how fucked up childrens authors used to be.

there is a thing on at ngv:

here ya go

sister  said about 5 years ago:

do you read the book junkie phil?

it's a very good read. The Annotated Alice in Wonderland is a good book to have by your bed.

I read it on acid once. It didn't do much.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Thanks Pops, Thats the one.
Also, I read a while back that Marylin Manson was maing a flim about the author of Alice In Wonderland, and staring as him. I think It'll be good as he's very much into the dark side of childrens stroys IE Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, I've got the book with the orignal ilistrations, which I like. The black and white ye old time drawings are ace. My GF had an Alice In Wonderland cook book that had recipies for Looking glass milk and shit like that. She lost it but I'm trying to find another one for her birthday.

i haven't read a good, creatively /perceptively challenging fiction book that wasn't of the science fiction genre in lord knows how long. everything these days seems to be some sprawling pastoral raymond carver recycled through a third world country bullshit or salman rushdie without the controversy. MORE CRAZY DRUG BOOKS! (irvine welsh, you have dropped the ball). just think, a book like alice in wonderland totally wouldn't get a mainstream release today, (just as caffeine, the driving force behind this rant, wouldn't be approved by the FDA) hmmmm. am i being ignorant?

not about drugs whatsoever...

alice

um... maybe it is

Godzilla  said about 5 years ago:

I studied this book in high school maths.

It used to be very hard to find a computer science textbook that didn't quote from Lewis Carrol

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

These are my fav characters: Bill + the " ? R U" Catterpilla

fourforward  said about 5 years ago:

Lewis Carroll was banned from associating with the real alice, a 4 year old girl as it was rumoured he was a paedophile. True story.

seriously  said about 5 years ago:

is there a non-animated version of this now?

fourforward  said about 5 years ago:

And there are seemingly some serious drug references in the story ( not sure about the movie, never seen it)

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, I've read he was a pedo as well as a frequent used of LSD or what ever it was back in those days.
Also, Eat this, Drink this.... make you feel larger then life ( Amphetamines) or Small as a flower (Downers) She even takes a bit from a mushroom at one point.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

The animation is really good for a 50's cartoon too. They did a great job revamping it all on the DVD.

There is no evidence of him being a drug user though he was banned by Alice's family from associating with her

Tom Waits' record Alice is based on Alice In Wonderland and it's fucking brilliant.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Only just realised on the weekend whilst watching some 60's montage tape that this song is compleatly about Alice.

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Recall Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen softly dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head
Feed your head
Feed your head"

I read it the other day Trans. Confirmed why I adore the book so (to the point of letting the 3D SUPAMAXFANTASTICECHO version go fuck itself quietly in a corner), and that my subconscious brain must be awesome. MUST BE AWESOME.
