Melbourne Pub Trivia Nights

el goodo  said about 8 years ago  or at  11:52PM on Saturday, September 9 2006 in chat

What are some good pub trivia nights in Melbourne?

None of that "Quizmeisters" stuff... what pubs still have decent, original trivia?

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

original ?

el goodo  said about 8 years ago:

Well, half the pubs use 'Fame' or 'Quizmeisters' trivia, who just farm out presenters to various pubs with the same questions and formats.

Perhaps 'unique' would have been a better word.

I was wondering what pubs still did their own trivia, ad which are worth going to. I need something to occupy my time nest week.

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

well i've never heard of these trivias, so i'm not sure

empress, east brunswick and corner all have trivia nights which are good, all hosted by the same crew though, so perhaps that doesn't count as original

el goodo  said about 8 years ago:

Yeha, I dig what those guys do. I like the GB one too. Am looking to try something new, but the internet is useless in searching for this kind of thing...

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

meh .. i'd rather just go to my local, and concentrate on having as much fun as i can there, rather than travel to somewhere inconvenient

Punch  said about 8 years ago:

i always liked the standard's trivia night. think it's on tuesdays, and pretty tricky.

el goodo  said about 8 years ago:

Cool. Anyone else?

unvisible  said about 8 years ago:

My team came second at trivia at the East Brunswick club last week. Won a bottle of wine. I'm pretty sure that 90% of their questions are just taken from recent issues of New Weekly.

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

did you take pity on me last week, unvisible ?

I went to a couple of trivia nights at a pub in yarraville. Not a bad night. We were the only people who rocked up. The 8 of us divided into 3 teams and won a bottle of wine, a jug of beer and $100 of drink cards. They supplied pizza and I won the 'jackpot' prize... a 51cm telly, without the box but it came with bonus dried coke spilled down the top. Now, usually walking out of a pub with a boxless telly under your arm would arouse interest from the cops.

Any decent Melb Triv nights at the mo?

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

east brunswick tonight

Ubu  said about 8 years ago:

Are there any music only trivias in Melb?

rosiefantail  said about 8 years ago:

Empress on Sunday.

rosiefantail  said about 8 years ago:

Also, I've known michael_horse's devious trivia tactics since back at the Ghetto of Hate Hotel on Mondays, where the winning team got to have their photo taken with a picture of dogs playing pool.

michael_horse  said about 8 years ago:

what happened to that photo collage ? we were up there quite a bit, dammit

sharptooth  said about 8 years ago:

is the GB one still going? that was always fun with Mrs Smifff
if I recall correctly she used to also have a bingo night on Wednesdays at the Terminus in Richmond?

davethescot  said about 8 years ago:

i whole heartedly recommend the empress on sundays, the east on tuesdays and the corner on wednesdays. All are excellent nights run by some of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet. Honest. swears

littlearch  said about 8 years ago:

i'd love to go to the empress on a sunday night, be like old times but with trivia. hmm, no but there

thing is, i'm working the next bloody day now

davethescot  said about 8 years ago:

This sunday is the last one for the year!!!

Congrats, Hyperfuzz and team - we came a very pitiful last - due to driving and parking issues we missed the first music-identification round that we would have done OK in and maybe bumped op a few spots. Oh well, it was fun anyway. I'm glad there was a decent audience there last night (the week before was a little bit bijou, shall we say; definite quality over quantity - the top 3 spots were chats!)

I miss lets get trivical. nothing compares.

trivia Wednesday nights at the reverence footscray. was interesting. themed nights with themed rounds, one music. next week is cheese.

liamsnice  said about 1 month ago:

The footy trivia on Saturdays now begins at 4pm

Kez  said 28 days ago:

Hey, Westies (and people with vehicles) - Wanna come to The Rev in Footscray for Mind Out trivia TONIGHT (Wednesday)? We've been before and it's fun. (You can join our team - drop me a PM if yr keen.)

Kez  said 28 days ago:

We came 4th (2-person team on this occasion - winning team had 10 members!).
So next week we'll try to better that. If anyone's interested give me a hoy before then.

Ghostface  said 27 days ago:

Me. I'll smash 'em!

TheBigShip  said 27 days ago:

I'm still missing Let's Get Trivical. Come back Laura!

Kez  said 27 days ago:

Yep, she was gold. Until she decides to make a comeback I've alighted on Forrtscray. The host is auite amiable and a music-head (rather than an out-of-work actor). There's a bit of general knowledge, but the music questions are broadly ones that 'we' may know - eg not Spice Girls to Eminem at the most 'alternative' end like some places.
Would you care to join forces, thebigship? We've been a smaller team with a floating membership so far in the couple of weeks we've gone, but held our own alongside more populated opposition teams.
Ghostface, you're on board for next week, yeah?

Kez  said 27 days ago:

(When the theme was cheese out team won some cheese.)

CryMeARiver  said 27 days ago:

Trivia at the Rev is great, Greg is a fantastic host and the random weekly themes certainly keep it interesting.
Kez, i'm not convinced a larger team is always an advantage...having someone with artistic skills for the drawing round certainly helps though!
What's the theme for next week?

seahunt  said 27 days ago:

I do trivia up in Bris. Find that a team with odd numbers works best - 5 or 7 = ideal size.

Kez  said 27 days ago:

Cartoons is the theme for next week. I've already listened to the Ramones version of Spiderman, so I'm off to a good start.

TheBigShip  said 27 days ago:

I'd love to Kez, but Footscray is a bit far since I moved out Eltham way. Hoping Laura brings something back northside soon. Have you pulled out that Cartoon comp from the 90s? I always dug Helmet's version of Gigantor.

Kez  said 26 days ago:

Mach Pelican's version of Gigantor is my difinitive (but I'll check out Helmet's one). Remind me, did Juliana Hatfield do the Josie & the Pussycats theme?

Kez  said 25 days ago:

(definitive... )
And to answer my own question, yep, with Tanya Donelly - probably haven't heard it since it came out (jeez, 20 years!), so not bad recall on that count.
