Going to high school in the late 90's, it seemed that EVERYBODY in the world who had good music taste loved Nirvana. But of course back then , i had no idea there were 'other' types of people besides, alternative kids, metalheads, nerds and jocks.
Were YOU around in the early 90's, when grunge was king? Was there a tight panted, scarf wearing, velvet underground name dropping backlash? "like, they're totally just rippin off the pixies man, kurt can't even SPELL fugazi"
- Curious

yes there was.
thread closed.
Before Nevermind: Nirvana were cool
After Nevermind: Nirvana were sellouts
That was my interpretation.
as far as i could tell everybody loved kurt
In Utero kicked ass over Nevermind so the backlash never arrived
and then of course he was gone.
This is an excellent question.
paging all old farts to the thread
In Utero forever
i had a demo of bleach punched into a pianola script. i listened to it on kurt's grandmother's pianola.
they were passe for me after that.
I totally missed Nirvana...seriously. It never even made an impact. I'm 29 so i'm perfect age for being into them, but i wasn't. Faith no more, RATM, Soundgarden, RHCP, Pantera, Metallica, The Fireballs....but no nirvana. I can only name about 3 of their songs.....
I MISSED SOMETHING THAT ALL PEOPLE MY AGE EXPERIENCED
Not at my school, people were too busy slagging off Stone Temple Pilots, until maybe a few years after nevermind when gen Y got into commercial punk and Kurt put an end to putting out new rekkids.
Fucking skegs, you may as well have pulled the trigger!
Utter crap, Tupelo.
FUCK stupid ass coolsies
You are a coolsie, MurderInc.
Oh, right, just trying to get a root, then...
I hung out with a bunch of people who hated Nirvana passionately. There were lots of us. I liked "Bleach" but couldn't be bothered with "Nevermind", II was through with"grunge" by then. I thought Kurt was a bit of a goose and I made fun of girls who worshipped him.
a decade of mojo and rolling stone has warped any accurate sense of history.

In Utero was a much rawer album than Nevermind
it did nothing but elevate the band critically and musically
well I didn't give a shit. I was into Jimi, and the 60's and Zappa and Be-bop and Classical Music and I was into guitar and Nirvana represented the decline of guitar culture..don't get me wrong a couple of hits I took notice of, but just like any other shit period with a couple of hits popping up..and there was other bands with their hits and shit. heaps of em..lots of shit hits..but grunge was a bit..yeah whatever..next please..but then again I think its always like that..soemthing hits and pretty much one gets over it in a day.
but I wasn't a coolsie. (in my head maybe but to no one else)
Yes. It's all too loud and is just noise. WHERE ARE THE HARMONIES? Why, in MY day, a group knew about SONGS, trained monkeys, hair, untidy, onions, etc etc.
But I didn't like them then, don't like them now. I went to see them at Selinas because some of my friends were going and walked out after about the 3rd song. Stupid friends. Stupid me.

Reporting for duty.
I never actually liked them until after he'd topped himself. I LIKE MY ROCK STARS DEAD!
interesting responses. keep em flowing.
Things were different back then with music I reckon. There were less little sub-sub-sub-sub-genres to get your head around.
true tripto..it was bigger and dumber. its better now..thats why its fun again...little sub genres exploring angles..

How did i just KNOW that a nirvana thread would lead to a mass sing along of the Final Countdown.
i don't really remember anyone hating them to be honest. i think around that time, the people who were into indie/alt/local scenes just added Nirvana to the list of bands they liked but never really launched off into grunge, they just went back to the cure and pixies...until Pavement arrived. However, the kids who really only listend to top 40 or oldies really embraced nirvana and pearl jam and all the whole grunge stuff.
This is as good a thread as any to post this, I guess:

i lived in the country during the early 90's, 2 stoner dudes and i loved nirvana, no one else in town had heard of them
Sounds like a gay town.
Ohhh yes, some of the coolsies fucking hated them as soon as Nevermind hit. And the whole 'grunge' fashion/joke that came shortly after just made it worse.
I liked Nirvana a lot and still do, but I haven't listened to their albums for a very long time... it's hard to get much out of listening to music that's been so over-exposed.
you're a gay town
Dead
I loved nirvana. And Hole. Pavement. Pixies. Sonic Youth etc. I was 18 and had just moved to melbourne from the country. I remember going to lots of socialist parties with people going absolutely sick to Nirvana. Good times
I hung out with some metalheads at school who didn't like them because it wasn't technical enough. they felt betrayed when nirvana started getting serious coverage in Hot Metal.
oh and they didn't like the term "metalhead". they preferred "metallist".
I was never into them at the time... but not because I was cool. I was always more of a Pearl Jam and Soundgarden man myself. That and fucking Weird Al. Man I was lame. Didn't really get into Nirvana until after In Utero when I began to realise just how lame I was.
I have a friend who was really into them and did the whole "buying everything they've ever done" thing. Multiple copies of Hormoaning and the split 7" with the Jesus Lizard. Poor lad hasn't actually moved on and he's 28 now.
yes, Nirvana were sanitizer appropriators. They held nothing to Napalm Death and The Jesus Lizard and the Melvins, and all things cool back then. We all hated them. And still do.
I'm an old fart and I didn't really know Nirvana until Nevermind came out. when I subsequently heard stuff that they'd done before I was a bit 'myeh' about it. I loved Nevermind, although I think it suffered from so much over exposure it's hard to actually enjoy it anymore, and seeing Nirvana at Selina's was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. Ever.
I would love a copy of that Jesus Lizard split.
I'll ask him if he wants to part with it. He's married with kids now living in the burbs of Canberra. What could he possibly want with it?
i admit i didnt like em in the 90s. i was a britpopper and in later years a pavement follower. i like nirvana ok now but cant sit through a hole album.
Thanks tihstar!
I thought it was Eddie Vedder who couldn't spell Fugazi? Cobain did it to make fun of Vedder.
