California - things to do?

woodenindian  said about 4 years ago  or at  9:41PM on Saturday, March 15 2008 in chat

I'm heading to Oceanside, CA in about a week. It's between LA and San Diego. I'm not spending long there, but need some suggestions for things to do and see (i.e. bands to check out) while I'm having an awesome time being a beach bum. Will travel. Please help!

say hi to summer will you, for me please! She lives in orange county.

lowercase  said about 4 years ago:

if you are pressed for time, just eat. and eat lots.

woodenindian  said about 4 years ago:

I'm a bit worried about the food. I've heard about their 'small' sizes and their 'salads'. Plus I'm staying with relatives who aren't very conscientious eaters.

No offense, Frank, but Summer can get stuffed :)

I remember the gummi bears being awesome in 1984, but they probably suck now.

go to Sunset Strip and check out this band called RATT, I heard they are awesome ;)

postergirl  said about 4 years ago:

I'd kill to be in Cali right now!

UntalkativeBunny  said about 4 years ago:

UntalkativeBunny  said about 4 years ago:

UntalkativeBunny  said about 4 years ago:

I love San Francisco and San Diego

cupojo  said about 4 years ago:

Hit the thrift stores!!!

Gorn  said about 4 years ago:

Go to Mexico. Or avoid LA and head north to San Francisco.

woodenindian  said about 4 years ago:

Actually, I was thinking of going to LA one night and visiting The Smell and Club Ding-a-ling! (Looks like Justice Yeldham is playing there during my stay).

I definitely want to visit Tijuana, Mexico. Not sure if I'm allowed over the border, though.

monkeyman  said about 4 years ago:

Amoeba Records in LA. Awesome. Huge.

monkeyman  said about 4 years ago:

You will be able to visit Tijuana. I had no problems at the border. The tram goes there from San Diego.

Oh yeah San Diego zoo is pretty good too.

the power of 666  said about 4 years ago:

eat lots of mexican

Block  said about 4 years ago:

Isn't Amoeba Records closed? Or was it Tower on Sunset Strip that shut? Or the Rhino store? Who knows?
And you can't have your pic taken on the Marmont balcony like Robert Plant did- they've all been glassed in.

littlearch  said about 4 years ago:

tram goes to tijuana? god that sounds cool

Block  said about 4 years ago:

''Tram To Tijuana'' would be a great name for a song.

kreten  said about 4 years ago:

Whilst LA is a shithole, if you haven't been there before don't miss it. Pretty much so that you too can claim that it's a shithole.

Tijuana: The Americans let you out without scrutiny and the Mexicans also let you in without scrutiny. The only part that is really controlled is getting back into the USA. There's really not much to do there except eat, drink and be CONSTANTLY harassed on the Avenue.

Oh...and buy as much Viagra from the 'pharmacies' as you want.

Im gunna be there in September. I Love (Southern) California.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

Gonna be there in April next year for a month, currently planning a road trip..

Cotati (a mate lives there)
Napa Valley
SF
Yosemite (maybe?)
Hwy 101 to LA
Vegas
Disneyland
Tiajuana

Flying bus class too. oooh yeah.

nyx  said about 1 year ago:

Do Highway 1 instead of Highway 101, it's the one along the coast. It's more dangerous but the views are amazing.

anok  said about 3 months ago:

dear pals,

can anyone recommend a place for stopover on the coast between LA and SF in march? one night only.

thank

We've been on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for number 1
California here we come
Right back where we started from

Hustlers grab your guns
Your shadow weighs a ton
Driving down the 101
California here we come
Right back where we started from

California!
Here we come!

On the stereo
Listen as we go
Nothing's gonna stop me now
California here we come
Right back where we started from
Pedal to the floor
Thinkin' of the roar
Gotta get us to the show
California here we come
Right back where we started from

California!
Here we come!

Monterey. Interesting and historical 'n that.

I stayed here.

postergirl  said about 3 months ago:

If you want to stop earlier than that, on the other side of Big Sur, maybe San Simeon. It's pretty tiny but it's where Hearst Castle is, which is defo worth seeing.

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 3 months ago:

Ha... Big Sur! Monterey!

...you were living out your Beach Boys fantasies weren't you postergirl?!

postergirl  said about 3 months ago:

I totally was Tupes. Haha!

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 3 months ago:

That's great! I hope to do the same one day. As much as Mike Love irks me I can't fault his song Big Sur ...classic!

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 months ago:

madonnainn.com &/or if you fancy you're a good driver (like me) turn in off the coast and head for Hearst hacienda. The drive is fun, and I did it in rain at night as well as daylight. You'll be surrounded by US army (Fort Liggins) at the Hacienda but it's worth checking out both Madonna Inn and the Hacienda for their history. And Hearst Castle too.

I got lost & confused in Monterey :-(

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 months ago:

and if you want to stay at Madonna Inn, you can waste several hours trying to choose your amazing room. The hotel also specialises in martinis and cakes/pies.

If you stay at Hearst hacienda it's best to bring your own dinner, but breakfast is included. Enjoy drinking in the bar at night but be aware everyone else there is military, and 'hotel' staff don't stay onsite overnight - you're on your own.

anok  said about 3 months ago:

aww thanks you three.

i was tempted by san luis obispo purely based on the name.. madonna in... wow! also a pal recommended big sur... and monterey looks nice. i guess we might just wing it and if a place has a nice vibe we'll stick around. i'm not sure how much actual time we'll spend exploring a place. just wanted to break up the drive really.

postergirl  said about 3 months ago:

As I understand it you can't really drive along Big Sur – it is pretty wild and wooly. You might need to bypass by driving inland until you get to somewhere like Salinas and then you can go across to Monterey and start driving up the coast again.

PS I stayed in Paso Robles which is inland and not that far from San Luis Obispo – it is a nice little town in wine country.

postergirl  said about 3 months ago:

OK, I think you can drive along Big Sur but it is pretty challenging (scary).

Urquhart Bluff  said about 3 months ago:

We did it in a 30 foot motor home with a u haul trailer on the back in driving rain and fog. Yeah it was pretty scary! But absolutely breathtaking.

MissAustralia2003  said about 3 months ago:

O you big girls blouses it's a great drive! You go through a bit of forest at Big Sur but can stick close to the coast. They've put in a couple of big new bridges - maybe that has alleviated the scariness.

If you want a single lane very windy rd through mountains that gets rockfalls, wild animals and has no barrier with 100m+ drops and noone else for miles - try the Naciamente-Ferguson rd (I think that was its name) to Hearst hacienda. Fantastico!!

anok - avoid Madonna Inn if you fear loud colours or surreality

trafficsounds  said about 3 months ago:

anok i stayed here http://bigsurriverinn.com/ - this is timed pretty well for you to leave LA at about 11am/midday, and get there by 5/sunset. plus the staff can recommend the locals-only beaches to hang out in.

swahili bob  said about 3 months ago:

about 30 mins out of LA toward San Diego is Long Beach Antique Market - it's only on once a month on a Sunday - but honestly, it's acres and acres of the coolest shit you'll ever see most at really good prices
