SympatheticJuror  said about 11 months ago:

Built To Spill - You Were Right

Throughout the song, singer Doug Martsch quotes lyrics from classic rock songs. It begins with the chorus ''You were wrong/When you said/Everything's gonna be alright'', quoting the Bob Marley & The Wailers song ''Three Little Birds''. Throughout the verses, Martsch quotes lyrics with more pessimistic outlooks on life, prefacing them with either ''You were right when you said...'' or ''You were wrong when you said...''

The lyrics quoted in the song are:

* ''Everything's gonna be alright'', from the Bob Marley & The Wailers song ''Three Little Birds'' off of the 1977 album Exodus

* ''All that glitters isn't gold'', from the Neil Young song ''Don't Be Denied'' off of Time Fades Away

* ''All we are is dust in the wind'', from the Kansas song ''Dust in the Wind'' off of the 1977 album Point of Know Return

* ''We're all just bricks in the wall'', from the Pink Floyd song ''Another Brick in the Wall'' off of the 1979 album The Wall

* ''Manic depression's a frustrating mess'', from the The Jimi Hendrix Experience song ''Manic Depression'' off of the 1967 album Are You Experienced

* ''You can't always get what you want'', from The Rolling Stones song ''You Can't Always Get What You Want'' off of the 1969 album Let It Bleed

* ''It's a hard rain's gonna fall'', from the Bob Dylan song ''A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall'' off of the 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

* ''We're still running against the wind'', from the Bob Seger song ''Against the Wind'' off of the 1979 album Against the Wind

* ''Life goes on after the thrill of living is gone'', from the John Mellencamp song ''Jack and Diane'' off of the 1982 album American Fool

* ''This is the end'', from The Doors song ''The End'' off of the 1967 album The Doors

Anyone mentioned Weezer ''El Scorcho / Public Enemy ''Don't Believe The Hype'' yet?

''I'm the epitome of public enemy''

Jacobean  said about 10 months ago:

SympatheticJuror, that might just be one of my favorite Built to Spill songs ever. Ever.

And while I'm here, I don't think anyone's mentioned the one hit wonder by Peter Schilling, ''Major Tom (Coming Home).'' It not only references, but it is the unofficial, and very catchy, sequel to David Bowie's ''Space Oddity.'' It's one of those songs you totally forget about until you hear it out of the blue on late night radio while you're alone in your parked car, waiting for your friend to finish her cigarette—and hearing it in that moment, preferably in winter, makes you wish you heard it every day, at least one time. ''4-3-2-1...earth below us...'' Right?

Also, another Jimmy Eat World/Weezer related reference: ''Hear You Me,'' JEW's tribute to Weezer's ''Mykel and Carli,'' a song about their late friends who happened to run the official Weezer fan club.

Mark does stuff like this all the time!

Velodrone  said about 10 months ago:

Kind along the same line… (referencing bands / albums).

The one I remember the most is from the LFTR PLLR song 4Dix

“The kids were so impressed with Death they mixed The VSS into In Love With Jetts”.

(FYI: I Love With Jetts was an album by Antioch Arrow, and The VSS were an amazing San Diego band).

Three Belle & Sebastian ones:

From ''Piazza New York Catcher''.. ''we settle for an epitaph like 'Walk Away Renee''' referencing The Left Banke.

And from ''I Don't Love Anyone'': ''He said 'The World Is As Soft As Lace''', referencing Felt.

And to a lesser extent, in ''Legal Man'', the ''LO.V.E Love'' bit may or may not be referencing the Al Green song of the same name.

Bluebottle Kiss/Jamie Hutchings is the king of this shit, especially to his own work.
I can't quiet rember specific song titles at the moemnt sorry but...
I think it's ''So Slow'' off Come Across references previous album title ''Revenge is Slow''. ''Window on a Ferry'' from Slight Return + Out Seeds ep has the line ''I know, I'm gonna have to Come Across'' over and over.
The Black Birds on Doubt Seeds uses Jamies 1st solo albums title ''I saw you getting wiusked away by someone driving a Golden Coach'' and an older BBK song later on ''You know I had the strangest dream someone was playing One Way Ticket To Antarctica''

After The Flood references Money's to Tight to Mention.

There's a song on the ZOND album where the opening riff kinda sorta sounds like Swans' ''In my Garden''...Or am I just imagining it?

Anyway, got the ZOND album last week after a friend recommended them. I'd never heard any of their music before so it was a complete gamble getting the record. Really paid off though, been listening to it all week.

''Kim Gordon's Panties'' by Rapeman references Young Marble Giants in the intro, then ''Schizophrenia'' in the lyrics. So does Catpowers ''Schizophrenia's Weighed Me Down''.

Billy Bragg does this A LOT!

ghoti-max  said about 4 months ago:

I really love it when bands do this, especially for their own songs...the first time I heard the new Hold Steady album there were those lines in the Weekenders ('There was that whole weird thing with the horses...etc etc..I was thinking we could pull another weekender, you've still got a bit of clairvoyance') and I had this weird eerie feeling that I'd heard that before, then realised it was all in reference to Chips Ahoy which was about a clairvoyant gambler that went on to go 'came in six lengths ahead, we spent the whole next weekend high.'

I lost my shit when I then realised that maybe half of their songs are all related to each other in this big thread of characters and stories that I'm still trying to figure out.
