PS3.
That's my thinking, but I don't have the brain power to explain my reasoning. Sorry...
360, better game lineup atm. and cheapser.
More info on this very topic here.
Anyway, at the moment, I'd go with the Xbox. The new ones apparently have another heatsink and stuff to avoid the redlight issue, though apparently they still occur. It has the best online service of any of the three current consoles and best range of games.
The overriding fact is the PS3 is still ridiculously over-expensive considering the lack of games available. It's really a glorified blu-ray player. I would never consider buying it until both the price drops dramatically and Metal Gear Solid 4 come out. Both are not for a good six-eight months, I'd say.
I wish I could bolt a PS1 to a Ps2 to make a PS3. Y'know: PS1+PS2=PS3. It's basic maths. And cheaper...
funniest ever m-c.
I wish I knew you when I was 14.
Maybe even a PS.....12?
blows mind
Aww...shucks...blushes.
Man. A PS12 would make you the coolest kid on the block. The suburb, even!
WonderBoy III- The Dragons Trap would look totes awesome on PS12.

No dizoubt!
It'll look ace. Full colour, on an LCD screen, with kickass rendering and shit. I'm developing me a PS12!
i reckon they could get up to 18 pixels and 6 colours happenin up in that shit!
on 106cm LCD screen. How could that possibly look anything but good?
I'm getting myself a PS3 as soon as GTA IV comes out. I know it's going to be on both systems, but I reckon the PS3 is the better choice purely for the potential it has.
It's more expensive, but it's also more powerful than the 360, has a built in hard drive and a blu ray player. The games are a bit light on but I reckon given a bit of time, the PS3 will really shine.
Yeah. I do think the PS3 is a superior machine. It's processing power and graphics capability is well beyond the 360's reach. Most games look better on a PS3 than an Xbox, though I dunno how good a TV you need to see the difference. They don't charge for you to play online (unlike Xbox live), which is just nasty (no matter how cheap). They have none of the problems of the Xbox, which is one of the most unreliable pieces of hardware in a looooong time. It's not just the 3 lights, there are other issues. And, as far as exclusive games go, the PS3 is a newer console, there's been less time to develop games for it. Also, I prefer the playstation controller by a country mile. ANd really, those last two points are subjective.
Anyway, that's my slightly delirious, and very badly written, abridged version of why I'd probably buy a ps3 over a 360. When GTA4 comes out, to a hopefully cheaper console.
Also, what Rorge said.
Oh, and there's always the first thread on this if this one doesn't come up with the goods for you.
spanks heaps! honestly the ps12 sounds the best! ah to dream...
Wii
Rumours abound that both the xbox and Wii will get a Mk.II in 2010.
I have a Wii, but still want a PS3 purley for some of the games it has and will have (F1, GTA4, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed).
As has been said before, too expensive to get yet until the benefits are overwhelmingly compelling..
you mean xbox 360 vs ps3, yeah? xbox 360 has dead rising. 'nuff said
if the ps3 was smaller, cheaper, had good cheap games available, etc..
i dont give microsoft money. no matter what.
get a pinnie....bit more expensive but heaps more fun
buy a Ps2 and spend the next year playing old, cheap games. then buy a Wii
Playstation controller kicks the arse of anything else. Also it plugs into a TV with no fuss, so I can sit on my couch and play. That is why consoles are better for most games. FPS's kick arse on PC though.
timesplitters are great console FPS tho
from what i can tell, ps3 and xbox360 are roughly equivalent in processing power (unless you're doing protein folding simulations or something).
the 360 has most of the the good games, but they sound like a jet taking off and about 10% of them blow up in the first year or something horrible like that.
the ps3 plays blu-ray movies but.
i'd get a 360, but w/ extended warranty. or a DS.
I have a Wii personally, but just because I couldn't own any other console if there's new Mario, Metroid or Zelda games out that I don't have.
I thought the initial post by Pickles had the whole ''I want to play games pretty much now'' so my recommendation was based on that. I still say Xbox in that case.
I don't doubt that PS3 will come good. It has the potential to be the best of the three ultimately, but not for a while.
Wii is cheaper, more innovative, has better casual games and has games that won't be ported to the PC
I love that. ''A $200 handheld is as good as a $700 Microsoft monstrosity''
I thought they were about the same on processing power, with the PS3 up a little, but apparently not. From what I've heard recently, just the nature of a cell processer means that the PS3 is far more powerful. Also, a BluRay disc can hold so much more than HDDVD, means that the games on a PS3 have more potential...
This all said, I'm not getting anything till GTA4, and then I'll probably pick up a PS3. Hopefully it will have gone down in price by then, or have a good bundle pack. I wanna play the new Burnout. And Skate.
I reckon the DS is possibly the best console ever.
does the PS3 have a Power Rangers ripoff controlled by shouting at the screen? does the XBox 360 have Yoshi's Island 2? Does the Wii have an upcoming game that trains your face to make funny faces in public?
I don't think so!
the 360 absolutely kills the PS3 simply by having nearly all the must-have games of the last 12 months.
Bioshock is also another reason - what a rad game!
Eh, as much as I love my SNES, I'm not overly interested in getting a Wii or a DS. Played both of them (the DS a lot more) and they're fun for casual stuff and party games, but I don't pay hundreds of dollars to play something casually. Just not my thing really...
Meh. I can play Bioshock on my computer. And probably prefer it that way.
Wii has No More Heroes and new Zelda
moo-core, it's way trickier than that.
the ps3 has a relatively weak main CPU and a bunch of extremely fast but very basic co-processors. making them work together is meant to be a nightmare, and i've heard all sorts of strange things coders have to do to make them work at any decent clip (round-robin schemes for task access). plus, any work you send to them from the main cpu isn't going to come back straight away, so you have to build all sorts of crazy crap to handle calculations that don't return instantly (otherwise your main CPU is constantly waiting for data to come back). the 360 has a 3-way cpu, each of which has 2 hardware threads, which is a lot easier for most coders to wrap their brain around (but still a bit tricky).
also, the graphics card bit is a bit weaker than the 360 equivalent, the ps3 memory is fixed at 256Mb video, 256Mb main ram (instead of freely configurable like in the 360), it just looks like a freaking nightmare to get any kind of decent performance out of. if you're doing weather simulations or crazy physics it'd be pretty cool though.
disclaimer: haven't touched devkits for either, i'm happy to be corrected.
just buy a DS, anyway. heaps of good games.
The casual argument is just marketing bullshit. The games on Wii are just as hard as those on the other two. I dare anybody to tell me Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles isn't hard.
oh, the bluray thing is moot, because blu-ray seek access is so slow most games require an install to the PS3 hard drive. which is lunacy.
if you're installing to hard drive, you may as well put it on 3x DVD9.
i need a ps3 i reckon - for the meatier, more in-depth games, and so i can sit on the couch like a fat bastard and not have to be active in anyway to play.
I reckon the wii just doesn't have enough quality games. It has a few great games, but then a whole bunch of mediocre ones.
I tried to convince myself to buy one, but decided it wasn't worth it.
Wii has an Okami port... easiest game in the world but its heaps long
if you have the money to spend on a next-gen console get a Wii and upgrade your computer. most of the big games get ported anyway
how long do you reckon you'll spend with Smash Brothers Brawl?

Hard to get excited about ports of old games.
how long do you reckon you'll spend with Smash Brothers Brawl?
Not long, since I decided not to get a wii.
