Lars von Trier / Dogville

I Watched Dogville last night and really enjoyed it.
Reminded me so much of Bertolt Brecht's plays, the way the set was little more then chalk and a few seats and beds, And the use of light and sound to display themes.
I actually forgot 1/2 way through that there was no set.
It was actualy bassed on one of his plays, I later found out,''Ballade von der Seeraeuber-Jenny'' (''Pirate Jenny or Dreams of a Kitchenmaid''.
I've been reading up on him, and it seems he made some what of a sequel to Dogville called, Manderlay (2005) which has the same central character as Nichole Kidman's role in Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan.
Has anyone seen it, know if it's any good?
By the looks of Photos on the net, it looks very similar, but more about black slavery.
I've seen The Idiots, didn't like it, but am keen to see some more of his work.
Anyone got some recommendations for me?

i love this movie.

dancer in the dark is always a good place to start with others.

Breaking the Waves is blacker than black. great movie, but hard going.

scallywag  said about 4 years ago:

i hope that wasn't some kind of deliberate sick pun

nicko_mcbrain  said about 4 years ago:

unwitting, oddly enough...

SPOILER ALERT

I understand that all the folk in the town weren't very nice people, but what did the blind man do to deserve death?
I didn't get why he was killed, all he did was put his hand on her knee, then her thigh...
I guess he would have gone further, given the chance.
I didn't want him to die; he was the nicest one I thought.

Yah, twas a great film on the whole. Europa is probably my favourite Lars outing.

Vinterberg's festen i'd also recommend, re watched it recently, winner.

i love lars von triers films.
haven't seen manderlay yet and there is yet another film he directed called ''Boss of it All'' which is supposed to be very lars von trier-y but with more laughs.....

dancer in the dark, breaking the waves and the idiots are all knockout, once-seen-never-forgotten films. Kingdom series 1 and 2 are soon to be released on DVD, the wife and I can't wait

slothman  said about 4 years ago:

one thing i loved about dogville was the way what little set dressing there was (the lamps, wood from the mine, little bridge near the garden) were all incorporated into the story to further debase grace

djbollocks  said about 4 years ago:

The Boss of It All is great. Probably the most enjoyable film he has done. I love everything Von Trier has done. I would highly recommend you see his TV show The Kingdom, it's like Twin Peaks meets ER, very scary and very funny as well.

Breaking the Waves is a beautiful film, Dancer in the Dark is also very good, worth checking out his earlier films as well like Epidemic and Zentropa.

I don't like ER,but love Twin Peaks....
Hmmmmm.....
Is there anything thats kinda like Dogville, narator and what not?

september  said about 4 years ago:

i liked breaking the waves. the scene where she is in her hooker's best and riding her bicycle is raw and touching. i didn't think much of the idiots and i know better than to even look at that one with bjork in it.

tangy_zizzle  said about 4 years ago:

Dancer in the dark is probably the closest he's done to Breaking The Waves. They're both brilliant.

september  said about 4 years ago:

NO DEAL.

tangy_zizzle  said about 4 years ago:

Do you dislike bjork? If you love or hate bjork then the movie offers much. You cannot lose.

djbollocks  said about 4 years ago:

I absolutlely loved The Idiots. Hilariously subversive.

september  said about 4 years ago:

alright tangy.

i didn't want to watch breaking the waves either but scallywag gave it a big wrap.

alright. i'll give it a go.

tangy_zizzle  said about 4 years ago:

Breaking the Waves is similar to Dancer In The Dark in that sitting through it is like sinking in quicksand.

tangy_zizzle  said about 4 years ago:

The impending sense of doom is worth the price of admission alone. And if you hate bjork, you get to watch her continually fucked over for a couple of hours before the big ending.

nopromo  said about 4 years ago:

dogville is an all time fav for me junkiephil. if you liked that you HAVE to see ''Dear Wendy''. Its written not directed by Von Trier but still really amazing.

saw Manderlay a couple of weeks ago, and its tragically absolute rubbish. i think he has even shelved Wasington, which was meant to be part 3.

also The 5 Obstructions is amazing. Trier gets his friend to make lots of short films for him.

tangy_zizzle  said about 4 years ago:

I really wanna see The Five Obstructions. Sounds very cool.

djbollocks  said about 4 years ago:

The Five Obstructions is a really interesting exercise in filmmaking. Lars is always good value in his own films.

pang  said about 4 years ago:

Spoilers continue:

The part I liked best was the David Bowie bit.

nopromo  said about 4 years ago:

dear wendy, for fans of dogville...

Tramdriver  said about 4 years ago:

I liked Mandalay.

slothman  said about 4 years ago:

dear wendy was a bit of a fizzer for me.

juicenewton*  said about 3 years ago:
