The Polyphonic Spree 'do' Nirvana on new EP
By Mike Diver
Many-legged smock-sporting collective The Polyphonic Spree are to release a new EP Stateside next month, featuring a Nirvana cover.
The five-track release, Wait, sees the band tackling the Cobain-penned Lithium, originally on Nirvana's 1991 breakthrough LP Nevermind. The tracks Mental Cabaret and I'm Calling are previously unreleased, while the remaining songs - Love My Way and Sonic Bloom - are covers of The Psychedelic Furs and Tripping Daisy respectively.
The band's next album, The Fragile Army, will be released next year. In the meantime, the Wait EP is released on September 5.

I MUST HAVE IT
hardly a 'cover' of tripping daisy seeing as tim delaughter wrote all their songs.
polyphonic pests. i will have to go into therapy now that you have reminded me of them.

WAIT.
This would be a perfect word choice for how we have felt as a group. The EP we have put together is somewhat of a spontaneous decision. However, you'll find some of the recordings were done some time ago, a different agenda and different set of rules surrounding the spree over the last two years. Originally, we hoped to put out a "covers" CD, inspired by the fact the group has dabbled with covering songs and paying tribute to other artists since inception, typically found in our live settings. So the idea of putting out either an album or EP of some sort was always a desire of ours.
Eventually the idea came to fruition in Januuary 2005. Jon Brion (producer) came to Dallas and we spent an evening banging on instruments, ideas, and whatnots. Later that night we stumbled upon some musical ground that would soon lead to “Love My Way” (Psychedelic Furs), “Lithium” (Nirvana), and “Love Grows” (Edison Lighthouse); the latter remains unfinished due to time constraints on the sessions. Nonetheless, the quick trip to Los Angeles proved to be a spirited event. Soon thereafter we entered a studio in Dallas to work up “Sonic Bloom” (Tripping Daisy), a very fitting cover for the Spree.
Good Records Recordings and Hollywood Records along with Itunes finally present the EP called WAIT. It contains the aforementioned covers and two new songs, “Mental Cabaret” and “I'm Calling” written by Tim DeLaughter and performed by The Polyphonic Spree this last year. These two original tracks will more than likely appear on our next full-length album, The Fragile Army, due out early 2007.
Til then, we wait.

Covers......a little bit is fine, a whole record? Meh.
Now the soundtrack to ads for the UK supermarket Sainburys...
New original tracks now on MySpace
Cute cover art.
This CD arrived in the mail yesterday (T. DeLaughter's music shop Good Records charge much less for shipping than the Spree's merch site - I paid AUS$15 in total). Giving it a listen right now, sounds good...
the nirvana cover is rad! they make the track sound so incredibly happy.
Yeah, Lithium rules.
The 2 tracks from The Fragile Army (upcoming 3rd album) are good too, a bit different to Together We're Heavy...
Is their Furs cover as bad as Lorraine's??
.... I'm officially unhealthily obsessed with the 2 new tracks. I'm Calling is one of the best songs they've ever release. I am looking forward to the new album SO MUCH...................
............................. please, another tour, Mr. DeLaughter??
New image shock!
Polyphonic Spree return with digital EP (and new look)
The Polyphonic Spree have launched a brand new look. Gone are the white robes, in are black combat uniforms bearing a white heart, a red cross and an image of the robed Spree.
Here's what chief Spree Tim DeLaughter says: "The image of the 'old robe look' is actually us in the robes...we refer to it as our 'badge of strength' ...we always liked the fact it was in abstract form. A mass of some type, not particular to robes. The heart is a symbol of care and thoughtfulness. The cross represents first aid...all these as humans, we're capable of. It's just a reminder. We are The Fragile Army."
Though 'The Fragile Army' is actually the name of the new Polyphonic Spree album, due to drop next year. But you can get brand new Spree sooner than that. London indie Tough Cookie release a digital only EP on iTunes next week, 7 Nov, featuring two tracks from the album, plus covers of songs by Nirvana, the Psychedelic Furs and DeLaughter's former band, Tripping Daisy.
Track listing as follows:
Mental Cabaret (new album track)
Love My Way (Psychedelic Furs cover)
Sonic Bloom (Tripping Daisy cover)
Lithium (Nirvana cover)
I'm Calling (new album track)

Tripping Daisy are fucking awesome and I LOVED the Tragiverse cover (which, by the way, they've only played a handful of times - it was pretty much a new inclusion for the Aussie tour). As nicko said, Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb is a great album and if you can track down their last self titled album it's well worth it.
I went to the Syd/Melb shows this week and they both ruled - Melbourne slightly better due to lack of jet lag among the band.
Awesomeness.
This tour was so much fun, flynn and buffy, which shows were you side of stage for?
Interview with Tim DeLaughter on Burning Vinyl at 3pm today - 3CR 855am or www.3cr.org.au
will be listening in for sure!
I heard last night sucked bad.
Too long setlist, too many shit covers, too much Disney forced positivity, and too much Southern Comfort product placement. Simply too much.
yeah, was shite compared to last time.
slow start. they pulled something together in the end, but it seemed like PS by numbers. none of the genuine emotion or enthusiasm of their Hi Fi show last time.
also - sound is shit at the Forum when you are well close to the stage, i have finally noticed.
and: they have replaced half the band with kids. it was weird to see a dramatically smaller 'choir' than normal, and half the band under 25.
Yeah, people under 25 suck.
Damn right, Anne. Specifically those 22 and under.
not at all, was just surprised, as i have seen them 3 or 4 times now.
this was the first time where half the spree could have been Tim's kids.
Totally agree.
something strangely unsettling about that.
the polygamic spree?
ONE DAY I WILL MEET YOU AND SMACK YOU IN THE FACE.
Lovingly.
I look forward in anticipation.
I see you shiver.
Oh, I shiver violently.
On the contrary, last night was my 5th Spree gig and arguably my favourite. The 2008 tour - I saw 'em in Melbourne and Sydney - was average by comparison. Band was absolutely on fire and played 30 mins past curfew, including a number of songs not on the setlist, because they were digging it so much.
A few regular band members couldn't make it to Australia so they got a few fill ins this time around, there aren't any major permanent line up changes.
Down yr spi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yine?
Um, x-post.
