Camille

anyone else like this French singer?

Released two albums that I know of - 'Le sac des fills' and 'Le fil' - and was the singer on the first Nouvelle Vague album (yunno, that band that did the bossa nova versions of new wave and punk songs).

In 2005 she released the album 'Le fil'. This album incorporated an avant-garde concept - a string ("le fil"), which was a tone that persisted throughout the entire course of the album. All of the songs in this album are based on the exploration of the voice, with only a double bass or double bass and keyboard as accompanying instruments.

Interesting.

Now, who's gonna be the first to say she's hott?

And who is gonna be the first so say she looks slightly mannish?

Oh, wiat, I just did both, didn't I?

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

shaddup modi.

the music, anyone? Will just bump tomorrow, I reckon.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

cute video for Ta Douleur here. Modi, you may want to check her out in that - she gets half nekkid.

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

Modi - Oh are we talking about Michelle Rodriguez again?

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

I will definitely check out the music. Not so concerened about whether she's hot or not, to be honest.

I liked the Nouvelle Vague thing, except where she sings the pronunciation of "Black Maria" wrong.

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Hahahaha. I like it. She's goofy, with all the mouth percussiony bits she does through the song.

Also, to be more accurate, she gets less naked as it goes along.

Rorge  said about 5 years ago:

She's on that 'So Frenchy So Chic' release isn't she? I like her singing... but she does look a bit mannish.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

heh, the only reason I pointed that out was that you seemed a little fixed intially on appearances.

I love the 'thread' of the drone throughout the album. I think she's performed with Sain Supa Crew before - would love to hear that collaboration!

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

dunno that one, rorge. It's a comp, I assume?

Rorge  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah... brought out for the French Film Festival...

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

ah yes, just Googled it, ta. Well, with any luck she'll have her profile raised a little and then she can bloody well tour here!

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

More making comment on the usual reaction to female artists on this board. Guys can be appreciated for their fantastic "art" no matter what they look like, but women still seem to be reduced to how hot they are.

Take for example, Inactivist's thread today about some Swedish chick rockers. No mention of their music, just straight away an analysis of their perceived hottness, and therefore worth as preformers.

Sorry, I may be sounding a little cynical and shit. Too much science for one day I'm afraid.

Anyway, I liked the song I just played, I will seek out more. Do you have any? It's kinda poppy, but as I don't parlay le francis too good, I can appreciate the music of her voice a bit more than I might with an english speaking singer. I really do like the percussive non verbal stuff she does throughout the song, though.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

I know modi - I guess if I hadn't posted a pic no-one would have said anything. sigh

anyhoo, am err, 'researching' songs now. For me, I love French (and Spanish, and Portuguese, and Russian etc etc etc) singers because I can't always understand the lyrics and the voice becomes another instrument - nothing is overpowered. Plus, if the lyrics are naff I don't cringe!

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Hehe. I just "researched" some stuff today myself.

Anyway. I'ma go to bed now. I'm stuffed.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

ooh! More Camille with some cool live vocalization and effects. She looks like she has fun performing.

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

Can't keep eyes open to watch it.

Must... sleep... now....

Can't... talk.... complete... sentences...

No! It's track 2 on Le Fil.

email  said about 3 years ago:

Ah, I never remember the track titles ;-)

ladyinred  said about 3 years ago:

In all honesty i think ''Le sac des fills'' is the better album. Maybe because i like 'Demeure D'un Ciel' very muchly and i picked this album up before her second when both were out.

kuroneko  said about 3 years ago:

I wait two years for her to tour here and then can't afford a ticket. Fucken'.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

Merde!

kuroneko  said about 3 years ago:

Woo! Got tickets. Off to this and then straight to True Radical Miracle afterwards. WIN!

russiancaravan  said about 3 years ago:

Ooh - this would have been great. Amuse-toi bien!

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

This will be pretty bloody interesting! A night of contrasts for sure.

tangy_zizzle  said about 3 years ago:

Well this was a bit good.

tangy_zizzle  said about 3 years ago:

..as in, i LOVE her. And the body percussion, beatboxer, piano band were amazing.

tinyman  said about 3 years ago:

fantastic. i'm seeing her tonight.

mcclap  said about 3 years ago:

Yeah, beforehand I was dubious as to how well they'd manage to replicate the vocal craziness/body percussion live, but they pulled it off perfectly

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

Brilliant show. What a voice. I loved the two guys beatboxing. Highlight for me was her cover of Dead Kennedies 'Too Drunk To Fuck'. What a physically demanding show. Some hilarious audience participation and out-of-time clapping. Ha ha.

tangy_zizzle  said about 3 years ago:

hehe, spoiler!

tinyman  said about 3 years ago:

oh bravo. i didn't know what to expect. but i enjoyed that.

kuroneko  said about 3 years ago:

Wow, what a show last night (in Melbourne). I loved her first two records but wasn't convinced with the latest ( I guess I just enjoy the sound of French more. English sounds clunky in comparison). Whilst there was a fair smattering of later stuff, it was delivered with such verve and joie de vivre (it's French, it's allowed) that I couldn't help but like it. Camille is engaging, spunky and has a voice to knock yer socks off.
Highlights: the body percussion (the banging on chests to produce a waver in the voice, the claps, hand rubbing and stomps), the awesome beatbox duel, the crowd going nuts to the hits like 'Ta Douleur' and 'Au Port'.
Incredibly tight band - no instrumentation other than grand piano. Just Camille, two male backup singers, two female backups, pianist / singer and those two amazing beatboxers approximating a traditional band set up.

ladyinred  said about 3 years ago:

It was ABSOLUTELY WOW!!!!

I haven't heard too much of the latest album, some of it I liked. but the first two were awesome enough for me to shell out and even drag my sister along. :)

I actually took a few vids. I wish i got the entire beatbox battle that would have been ace! Anyways i'm probably going to go out on a limb and say this is a VERY hot contender for gig of the year. And it's only January!

Her stage prescence was captivating. At first i ws expecting a more subdue performance but i'm so glad they shot that expectation down! The costume changes, and the energy Camille fed to her band and the audience was topshelf. I had a good chuckle at her makshift men's shirt skirt that she made. :)

A great mixture of different styles of sound!

ladyinred  said about 3 years ago:

Oh.. and the stupid girls calling out Ezra's name in the middle of the show (and who were being bloody rude/inconsiderate to the peple around them) were near me and at the end of the gig the poor dude comes out possibly to try and meet them and looked at me if i was declaring my love for him. pffft... girls were nowhere in sight.

email  said about 3 years ago:

Highlight for me was her cover of Dead Kennedies 'Too Drunk To Fuck'.

Agreed. I also agree with pretty much everything that has been said about the shows. Damn amazing.

If that's the only show I go to this year, I think I'll be happy.

Oh, and she was a lot funnier than I'd ever expected.

tangy_zizzle  said about 3 years ago:

Too Drunk To Fuck came over the PA at Melvins last night and I had Camille's voice singing it in my head. Surreal.
