Built To Spill

Can anyone tell me more about these guys?

Listening to an album now which I assume is a new one and I'm really loving it, awesome stuff and I know nuffink about em. I have a vague thought that they have been around for a while (I think I remember seeing awesome gigposters for them a long time ago?).

Oh yeah this album is sweet

I teetered on the edge of love, but they lost me before the bump.

VoxFuzz  said about 5 years ago:

'Keep It Like A Secret' is one of my fave albums ever. There other stuff is still good, but that one's a winner. Reminds me of a very good time in my loife.

Can't wait to see 'em live.

ghostofbarry  said about 5 years ago:

Love this band. Get 'There's nothing wrong with love', there are some great songs on it.

Doug Martsch had a band called Treepeople before Built to Spill, worth listening too also

smokevswater  said about 5 years ago:

thanks dudes I'll look it up. Are they coming out?

VoxFuzz  said about 5 years ago:

AAARGH. "Their other stuff." Fucking hell.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

everyone has a different favourite. and perfect from now on is mine. coz it is.

VoxFuzz  said about 5 years ago:

"I'm gonna be perfect, starting nooooooooow."

I love that line. I love that album too.

Awww. Wish I had some here.

BurtBacharach  said about 5 years ago:

did Built to Spill do that great pop song with the lyrics along the lines of 'I'm not myself, whenever you're around'?

Hip Priest  said about 5 years ago:

How exciting smokevswater! You have the entire BTS catalogue ahead of you to discover and enjoy. Listening to them all (even the Live album), they're fuckin amazing!

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago:

There's Nothing Wrong With Love is my favourite of their albums. Great band.

BurtBacharach  said about 5 years ago:

or maybe it was 'When you're around me, I'm somebody else"?

smokevswater  said about 5 years ago:

yeah i love it when you come across a new/old band like that. About a minute into the first song on this I had that lovely warm feeling and thought - 'ooo this is up my alley'

Hip Priest  said about 5 years ago:

Check out 'Treepeople' (pre Built To Spill). Their album 'Guilt Regret Embarrassment' (1989) is pretty sweat as well!

BurtBacharach  said about 5 years ago:

...it's okay everyone, was thinking about Guided by Voices. Carry on.

Lauren  said about 5 years ago:

ah, of course smokey! being a malkmus fan, I assumed you woulda been onto these guys already.

enjoy...

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago:

Burt I think you're talking about the song "Teenage FBI" by Guided By Voices.

charlesincharge  said about 5 years ago:

Else is a beautiful song. As is Temporarily Right.

They have lots of awesome songs though. A few crappers but mostly pretty good value.

Nowhere Nothing Fuckup is pretty cool for an early 90s album. Alternative without the cliche

katiepotatie  said about 5 years ago:

did they do a song the lyrics are like '...i cant get that sound you make out of my head i cant even figure out whats making it...'?

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

Doug Martsch is a genius.

Yes Katus, thats 'I Would Hurt A Fly' if my memory is working.

Still need to catch them in action one day.. one day..

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

My favorite lines go to the openers from Randy Described Eternity:

'every thousand years
this metal sphere
ten times the size of Jupiter
floats just a few yards past the earth
you climb on your roof
and take a swipe at it
with a single feather
hit it once every thousand years
`til you've worn it down
to the size of a pea
yeah I'd say that's a long time'

Here's what I can remember from the set:

Traces
In the Morning
You Were Right
Kicked It In The Sun
The Plan
Hindsight
?
The Wait
Sidewalk
Big Dipper
Carry The Zero

Hurt A Fly
The Weather
???

Very disappointing there wasn't more from There Is No Enemy. My favourite album of theirs.

The last song was Virginia Reel Around the Fountain - Halo Benders

youtube

It's also featured on Built To Spill ''Live'', which is a GREAT official live compilation, if you don't have it.

I think the other one might have been Distopian Dream Girl, but I can't really remember.

Here is a link to one of my favorite BTS shows. The recording is a bit muddy, but still very listenable. There's plenty of good, heated improvisational jamming that you don't always hear in their shows and the setlist is killer. Enjoy the ride.

It was a great show once again, but i went with a couple of new fans who had only heard the new album and you in reverse who only knew two(?) songs from the whole night and were a bit disenchanted. Still, with a 7 album catalogue...

rendit  said about 1 year ago:

brilliant show at the corner on saturday, i enjoyed it way more than the corner show in 07 - better setlist, less people, less hot. still can't believe they played virginia reel around the fountain.

if someone can pm me the current gmail password i will post 2 of the halo benders albums, don't tell me now and the rebel's not in (contains virginia reel around the fountain).

jumpjump  said about 1 year ago:

their show at Peats Ridge was interesting - they didn't play any song released after Keep It Like A Secret.

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

doesn't look like they've been playing much from the latest album - can imagine ''oh yeah'' would be a totally mindmelting live track.

bigdaddykane  said about 1 year ago:

It worked great on Letterman.

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

dang! didn't see that, think i'll suss it out.

Strange was also part of the Bris setlist...appeared early-ish.

Agreed! Although, the Melb setlist was nothing to complain about. Peats Ridge nothing past KILAS? That would have been great. Lucky, too!

i should not have missed this... curse my slim wallet

Agreed on both counts! Untrustable would've been incredible. I thought it was a really impressive set anyway, such a tight band.

By the way, does anyone recall which song it was that they ''dedicated to Julian Assange'' at the Melbourne gig?

nedb  said about 1 year ago:

Wherever You Go

mrs watson  said about 1 year ago:

I remember the dedication itself, but not the corresponding song.

bigdaddykane  said about 1 year ago:

Life's A Dream, Planting Seeds AND Hindsight ?!?!?

Where was Melb's There Is No Enemy love? Damn Brissy.

mrs watson  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah...I heard them sound check ''Planting Seeds'' and ''Life's A Dream'' at the Corner in the afternoon, but they didn't get a showing later that night.

Man, I love ''Planting Seeds''.

bigdaddykane  said about 1 year ago:

They soundchecked them both!!?!?!? Knew I shoulda been there at 3, stalking.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but someone finally uploaded the original clip for Car.
