The Shangri-Las thread

Spread the love for the best girl-group of them all!

So many great songs - and not just the big singles like 'Leader of the Pack' and 'Walking in the Sand'.

  • Right Now and Not Later
  • Train From Kansas City
  • Sophisticated Boom
  • Give Him A Great Big Kiss

etc, etc, etc

The production was across between Spector and Motown, and Mary Weiss's vocals were the perfect vehicle - slutty and vulnerable - and by God she was hott!!!

Awesome. I picked up a Shangri-Las best-ofrecord on vinyl not long ago for pretty cheap, which I was extremely happy with.

I think the Ronettes might just edge them out in the Best Girl Group Of All Time stakes, but it's a close call.

When I build a time machine I am going to go back in time and see the Shangri-Las backed by The Sonics.

Dan_Crad  said about 5 years ago:

The Ronettes might've had the quintessential 'girl-group' anthem in 'Be My Baby' but, for mine, The Shangri-Las had the better overall output. More diverse and interesting - The Ronettes could get a bit samey (but still good!).

good times. i only have a best of, but it's great when i'm in the mood.

How many songs have copied the "When I say I'm in luv, you best believe I'm in LUV L-U-V!" bit from the start of Give Him A Great Big Kiss? I think it might be getting close to double figures.

nopopnostyle  said about 5 years ago:

best group ever! definitely agree they had better overall output.

he cried = incredible

LUV!

This almost made me shit my pants when I first heard about it:

"MARY WEISS TO RECORD WITH THE REIGNING SOUND ON NORTON RECORDS! - Norton Records is proud to announce the signing of Mary Weiss, lead singer of the SHANGRI-LAS, to the Norton cavalcade of stars... Mary is set for a spring NYC recording date with THE REIGNING SOUND... Billy Miller and Greg Cartwright to produce ... Mary is selecting from a batch of great new comps from today's most talked-about songwriters including Greg Cartwright, John Felice, Andy Shernoff, Jackie DeShannon and others TBA... Mary's first album of new material since 1965... Mary is geared up for her return to the studio and STAGE... and so are we!

Mary was fifteen years old when she and her sister Elizabeth (Betty) began singing with identical twins Margie and Mary Ann Ganser in their Cambria Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York, as students at Andrew Jackson High School. They soon came to the attention of George "Shadow" Morton and shot into the charts with massive hits on the Red bird label including Remember (Walking In The Sand), Leader Of The Pack, Give Him A Great Big Kiss, I Can Never Go Home Anymore, Give Us Your Blessings and Out In The Streets. The Shangri-Las gave a voice to real teenagers, with Mary's explosive lead vocals delivering emotion packed melodramas that made them one of the most consistently exciting groups of the day.

Look for our interview with Mary on the Norton website in April, when you will learn where she's been and where she's going, setting the record straight about her days as a teenage rock n' roll star.

Says Mary: "I'm excited by the opportunity to work with Billy, Miriam, some great writers and a kick ass rock n' roll band!" Hail, Mary Weiss, ultimate cultural icon!"

Out In The Streets – whatta tune. Gives me goosebumps.

Dan_Crad  said about 5 years ago:

eeeeeeeeep!!!

I was doing a search on Mary just a few days ago - the latest info on her was from the mid-80s when she was a married interior decorator. The last show they (apparently played) was in 1989.

Ron  said about 5 years ago:

No. People should go and buy it - it's $US9 on vinyl straight from Norton, cheapskates.

djbollocks  said about 5 years ago:

I only just discovered this group recently. I heard I Can Never Go Home Anymore on the radio and just fell in love with it. So melodramatic.

My fucking lord, I can't express how much I love 'Out in the Street'
It's sound in incredible, structure beyond pop, I don't fucking know...
It's amazing.

I do love that line in 'Give Him a Great Big Kiss': 'Hmm, he's good-bad, but he's not evil.' (Borrowed by the Black Lips for their album title.)
