Ok haterz, here's a rare treat - tis a pirate radio set caught on video featuring Roll Deep crew and many more. If you've not listened to grime radio sets before I implore you to listen all the way through - the magic's not in the consistency but in the moments of brilliance. This video was probably taken some time in 2002/2003. Audio's not the best quality, but you get the idea...

Whoa! The T-Pain song featuring DIZZEE RASCAL was coming on as I saw the thread (review CD). Good sets?
It's a classic set featuring some big names - Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, God's Gift, Demon, Maxwell D, Crazy Titch etc. Pretty much uptempo grimey goodness featuring many classic tracks from back in 03.
Goes for about 45mins all up.
grime's going through a bit of a rebuilding phase....and everyones hanging for the new dizzee record.
but in dubstep land i've been getting every skream release i can find, skreamism vol 2 is a recent one, and worth checking out. I'll probably admit i'm in that dubbier/halfstep end of the spectrum, buts its good for winter.
the martin clark/blackdown release is out, has a burial mix on it.
lata's a interesting take on things, uses some hindi/bollywood vocal samples to help drive it along.
Buy the vinyl here and/or listen to far too short samples.
there was a dubstep tour in australia end of juneish (from memory) but didn't come to melbourne, no promoters.
see, this is one of those threads where I just grab some popcorn, sit back and make notes.
Dubstep WILL arrive in Melbourne. The scene is definitely growing. Only question is which sound system will be able to handle the bass! :D
BASS
i've been building up a large collection of random stuff (mostly downloaded, but well catalogued/good quality ones)
been considering doing one of those community radio courses, even a weeknight overnight shift to get a few hours on the radio would be fun.
Bring some bass back to the Laundry!
http://southernsteppa.com/ these blokes may be people to talk to about stuff as well.
bet nz has a better dubstep scene.
NZ has a dub scene, I know that much.
tangy - thanx for that, great sets. Anyone heard of Drop The Lime?
The daunting bit about starting to investigate a new sound (to me/you) is where to begin. In particular when the majority of the music is being released on 12"s. Is there a good comp out?
awesome drop the lime party mix here. gets a bit grimey in places
run the roads proabbly a good overview comp for grime (stick to vol 1 though)
dubstep allstars series are probably your best best for dubstep comps, theres 4 volumes, havn't heard 4 yet, kode9's one (vol 3 i think) is pretty good.
You know, the reason I reckon people don't coment on music discussion in a text based format is...
There's so much lingo.
I have no idea what the definitions of dubstep or grime are, though I have probably heard, and liked a whole lot of it.
Do you know what I mean?
Nice work posting a link, though, tangy.
If you're interested, I suggest watching the youtube links modi, and you will then know what a grime pirate radio broadcast looks and sounds like.
Grime is an underground London-centric style of music. MCs rap over crude uk garage-influenced beats. garage developed in the late 90s in the uk dance scene, taking influences from house, r&b and jungle to form something different. garage became a little oversaturated and adopted by terribly commercial aesthetics, and eventually a darker sound broke away and went underground. It's this darker sound which has gone on to become grime (vocal based garage-y style) and dubstep (more dub influenced, sub-bass heavy stuff).
An excellent piece on uk garage by Simon Reynolds
I'm not interested in giving history lessons though. Just pushin some new music which floats my boat yet doesn't really get any local coverage.
That's cool. But I think ignorance of terminology contributes to lack of interaction in threads. Just an idea that popped into my head.

I've been digging the Hyetal record more than I thought I would. I bought it on impulse and it mixes the whole '80s revival with more recent (ie '90s) sounds. I hear Severed Heads, some sounds that are typical of the more emotive drum and bass stuff, and there are some kinda trancey moments as well. It's sickeningly nostalgic in some ways but you can't help but succumb to it. It works really well as a record too.
Sounds amazing. Love the 80s movie montage feel.
