Youth Group - Boring

thisispants  said about 1 year ago  or at  8:30AM on Wednesday, November 7 2007.

I have to say, I love Skeleton Jar....or I did love it. I listened to their last 2 albums the other day and in retrospect I'm quite dissapointed. They can write a cracker tune, but their arrangements, particularly on casino twilight dogs are just boring stock standard fill in the gaps indie rock.

Here's hoping the next album sees them record something interesting and not seemingly aimed at securing another spot on an OC compilation.

They're teetering on the edge of dislike for me now.... c'mon youth group, push the envelope a little.

skeleton jar had some cracker tunes.

what's the cool thing to be featured on now that there are no more OC compilations? is it back to playing on Letterman?

thisispants  said about 1 year ago:

I think that'd be the home and away soundtrack.

aw c'mon kids - where's the love?

You tell us... Columbo

dude, i think you should be accusing a shedload of 'brandname' aussie bands of this very thing before picking on youth group. seems there's a fine line between 'standard' and qualifying as ''classic'' styling, no?

maybe it's just me - but i think Casino Twilight Dogs has some killer tunes - i might be way off the mark but i sense a big Dylan influence on this record - it's less about jangly pop and more about the lyrics. which maybe explains the less out-there compositions?

catching & killing, dead zoo and the destruction of laurel canyon are my favourites. even the cover of forever young is killer.

but you know - horses for courses..

what's the second track on ctd? it's a cracker.

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

On A String

thisispants  said about 1 year ago:

There's some good songs on casino twilight dogs....theres just something about the whole album that has a bad aftertaste....or after listen.

The Dylan influence I can hear....mainly on 'Let it go'....which lets be honest, is a blatant Bob Dylan Rip Off.

Hazard_Man  said about 1 year ago:

They need to go post rock.

Yeah... there's bits of phrasing on that album which sound exactly like other albums - one track is Dylan, one is Neutral Milk Hotel... still, they're good with their influences and hell even Forever Young still gets me

its a very solid album

jPack  said about 1 year ago:

Youth Group are one of the best locals of the past decade, easilly. Martin's a fckn genius songwriter. And he'd made his mark well and truly before they had success with Forever Young.

That being said, for mine SJ is their best complete work to date. High hopes for the next record, being tracked at the moment.

paulie  said about 1 year ago:

he also sounds a little less like rory gaslight on this one as on skeleton jar.

jPack  said about 1 year ago:

Sounding less like Rory is never a good thing for anyone ever :)

thenewmeatloaf  said about 1 year ago:

mmm, I've been progressively less impressed by everything they've done since Urban & Eastern.....still one of our better acts, though.

troplicalia  said about 1 year ago:

I have a strong memory of skeleton jar being flung from a moving tarago somewhere near the submarine town by a member of my old bjand. Haven't heard it since.. Maybe it's a grower not a show-er?

filterfeed  said about 1 year ago:

i agree with this. and when you stop trying to rip off gaslight radio, you fail. even gaslight radio are going down hill...

FlipYourWig  said about 5 months ago:

“We had brand recognition with Toby’s voice and yet we still didn’t get added to commercial radio.”

when I read sentences like this in interviews with bands, I turn off. Sorry. And I actually quite like some of the new stuff I heard on radio, myspace etc..

JJ  said about 5 months ago:

Where was this interview? I need a laugh...

Inactivist  said about 5 months ago:

Hearing bands talk about ''territories'' and ''markets'' makes me sad.

Anyone going to the East for these guys tonight? I predict a slow night.

timewaster  said about 2 months ago:

I really like their latest single. Don't know what it's called.

Yes they are a bit dull sometimes. But they're good guys and a really good band on the whole. Just have to want to hear that type of thing...

bigdaddykane  said about 2 months ago:
