A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas prospector (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early days of the business.
Jonny Greenwood does the score.
PT Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punchdrunk Love) is directing.
Looks like it'll be fab.
Jan 1st, 2008.
yeah, i've been looking forward to this since PTA was on the rollins show...
all signs (and reviews) point to AMAZING.
Some excerpts from Greenwood's score are here. Sounds AMAZING. Especially 6 and 7.
sorry, here...

Has anyone read any reviews? I think this is out in the states.
Saw a preview, which didn't really do much for me.

Are you crazyyyyyyyyy???
Anyone...Anyone...Bueller?
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a trailer about a movie about an asshole being an asshole. It was a tired and emotional day.
When the fuck is this out, eh?
feb 7, i think.
I think PT Anderson is vastly overated but I'd go see Daniel Day Lewis in pretty much anything.
gasp. so many 100s.
Daniel Day Lewis is king. Without him, this would look mildly interesting. Add a little DDL and it's suddenly a potential film of the year.
It looks amazing.
I think I have to agree with 6'er. I saw a preview last night and I just couldn't decide if it looked awesome or totally average....
CREEPY.
when nearly every major U.S film critic rates it above 8.5, it's gotta be pretty fuckin' awesome.
i'm excited for this. super excited!!
I just bought the soundtrack. RESULT!
oh man! where'd you get it from?

Still reeling.
Agree with this, found it amazing, and couldn't look away (despite the fact I drank too much water yesterday and had to go pee 3 times) from Day Lewis, he was just so engaging.
I liked the kid better than Daniel Day Lewis. I agree that it was way too long and I also thought it was overwrought and, in spots, just nonsensical. Lost me after about half an hour.
In other even more irrelevant news, I recently finished reading Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle' (not knowing anything about this film) and it was incredible - depressing and funny and horrifying and, you know, just everything. About meat , not oil.
pretty funny, i went to read the jungle on google book search and the sponsored link underneath was:
''Quality Meat Suppliers Gourmet Meats, Game, Poultry, Sausages, Seafood & much more! www.bjsfinefoods.com''
so it seems the milkshake line especially is generating alot of internet parody. p.t anderson put this in the film himself as a bit of a joke after being astounded that the analogy of a milkshake was used by a US senator being asked to explain drainage in a 1920 speech to congress
millions of videos on youtube like this:
milkshake
also... the bit where his brother declares he is plainviews brother.... from another mother....
thats hilarious
Plainview - god damned genius.
I loathe all of Anderson's work so far, but this didn't shit me all that much. The landscapes and lighting were pretty great, or maybe I'm just a sucker for the cinematography of Western films. On the length, I tend to prefer a film being too long than too short, but this one did stretch it a tad. I loved the whole opening dialogue-free sequence. Glad they kept that intact.
Danny Day was as epic as he was hyped up to be. I'd definitely watch any film he's in.
This movie really gave me the shits. It just bored me at the time but started to give me the shits on the way home and the next day - probably because I realised I just wasted 17 hours of my life. No denying DDL is amazing, but the movie was dull and disjointed.
If I rewatched it I know this film would shit me.
i came into this pretty sheepish cos anderson shits me at the best of times. i absolutely despise magnolia and i think it's probably the 3rd-worst film i've seen and definitely one of the most overrated.
but overall i liked it. it felt long but not overlong, and the performances were great. the milkshake bit really sticks in your head. 'it goes acroooossssss the room...'
good acting. nice camera work. shit story, mostly boring, quite confusing.
I heard the story is vastly fucked-around-with if you compare it to Upton Sinclair's Oil.
Anyone read it and able to verify?
I have an ex-rental copy waiting for a spin...
it's not really an adaptation, it's more ''inspired by''.
I finally saw it, and like a couple here, loved it.
I thought the cinematography was exceptional; though I wonder how much of that just happens when you're shooting in that sort of environment. The scene with the burning oil derrick was pretty amazing, however; very much classic cinema on a David Lean sort of trip.
The opening fifteen minutes or so - with hardly any dialogue - was exceptional. DD-L was great, though I did think that his dissolution came a little too forced towards the end. Not that the film was too long; it's just I felt the disjoint between Plainview pre-son's wedding and post- was a little too great... it's like he suddenly went completely alcoholic bonkers, rather than it being a continued arc.
Other than that, though, I liked his descent into arseholery; it was pretty mesmerising.
The score I didn't mind, but the cribbing from Penderecki (and the rearranging of Part's Fratres, I think) was a bit distracting at times. Certainly, I thought it worked much better at some times (with the plucked pieces, mostly) than others. It drew attention to itself a little too much, though.
Would be interesting viewing in concert with Citizen Kane and The Aviator, I think, as they all kind of cover the same ground.
So: thumbs up!
This has to be one of my all time favorites. It works for me on every level. The story line, especially the build up to '' I am a false prophet and religion is a superstition...'' amazing stuff!
hyperfuzz dragged me to see this movie. I hated it almost as much as I hate the piano, which is my most hated movie of all time. I almost walked out of the cinema. I'm not sure why exactly, because when I dissect it, I should have loved it. brilliant acting, fantastic script, great cinematography. but I still hated it.
it's just fucking cool.
I just didn't get it- seemed to go on forever.
I finished this film with a deep loathing for Eli, and a deeper loathing for DD-L.
Still, some of the themes and concepts in this film are exceptional, just fucken amazing.
