are you subjected to it? i'm really reaching my limit today. in fact, it's not so much sexism as sleaze/chauvanism that's got me disgusted right now.
i occasionally notice my boss casting misdirected glances my way - okay, that's creepy enough. but a colleague of mine, who is a boy, goes out to lunch with the boss and a couple of other males most days. sometimes one of the girls goes along, and my friend says that's fine (mostly), but when it's just the guys, it's full on.
for starters, the boss turns around and stares at every vaguely female-shaped form passing through his field of vision, and often remarks to the others about it. he talks about some colleagues in other departments with reference to their physical attributes, and today the boys were all talking about sperm at lunch time.
it's stressing my friend out and by extension, me - after all, if these workmates of mine are going along with this stuff at lunch, who's to say what they're thinking about me through the rest of the day?
i'm so fucking over this shit. it's 2007... aren't we supposed to be improving or something? no, no, forget i said anything.

''and today the boys were all talking about sperm at lunch time.''
well, apparently it was in the context of things they could say when they're about to ejaculate inside a woman. hmmm.
no, sorry, you're right - it's really very funny! haha!
swan - have you ever said/done anything about it? i am not quite sure what, as it might make you more uncomfortable to do so - but if there is a clear line where you are not comfortable, then you ought to do something.
the boss sounds like a sleaze, just by the fact that he is so unsubtle about it all. i mean, everyone perves - but not everyone makes others feel uncomfortable when they do so.
there's no point - why don't i just leave? people like that don't deserve to have dedicated employees.
the ladies here all go to coffee together are all on about the hot barrista down the road. is that sexist?
mind you - i did used to work in a place where there were photos of porn stars on the wall... breasts staring straight at me. mmm. nice. and lots of similar attitudes - whilst i was there. but nothing that i found personally threatening... it was just part of the culture. are you uncomfortable because it happens at all, or just because the boss is a sleaze?
bring on the lcd backlash!
Should've mentioned the context in the first paragraph, trumpie. A scientific discussion about sperm would have been acceptable. Dudes yelling out crass things about ejaculating, perhaps not.
True, but people like that do deserve to be stood up to.
That said, they're in a position of power, and it's undoubtedly hard to take action when they're the boss'n'all. A friend's been complaining about sexism in her workplace, where she gets given inappropriate secretary-like work despite being well-qualified an in a position where she shouldn't have to do that kind of stuff. Sucks.
My female boss told me I was a ''hot man'' today...is that sexist?
Had you just been for a run, LP?
True = ''people like that don't deserve to have dedicated employees'' that is...
isn't sexism illegal in the workplace?
shines, i'm uncomfortable because these guys seem generally like nice, professional people otherwise - anyway, what does it take for males to talk about this stuff in a group? am i the only one grossed out here?
No, blake...I was sitting at my desk.
i know you're probably gonna make me out as a politically correct anal nutter or something, but the fact is that i'm pretty liberal and i can talk dirty with the best of them - but not on work time, and not with people i have to be professional with. it's inappropriate.
so it is not so much that it is in the workplace then swan, but more that it happens, and you are disappointed that nice guys are objectifying women? i have to say, i completely agree. i know that when you hear guys talking about women as nothing but cum-holes and bodies, it is a little sickening. it can really make me think less of someone to hear such crudeness. and it is horrible that it is happening in your work place anyway. but i guess the issue is that it is happening at all...
If somebody is making you uncomfortable or talking about some thing you would rather they did not pull them up on it straight away and don’t let them fob it off.
Like if somebody is staring at you in a creepy way, straight way give them the I know you are looking now fuck off look. Let them know that you see/ hear what they are doing and it is not appropriate. If they know you know then they will get less fun out of it.
But yeah if it really sucks talk to sombody else in your work place about it, Alot of other women and even men might be haveing trouble with it too but don't have as much guts as you to say some thing about it.
Well yeah, if it is purely a professional relationship then it might be a bit out of line.
Do these blokes spend time with each other outside working hours?

That was my experience. Five buckets of sexual innuendo, really crappy jokes like ''You're big young man Alex! Get it? Big? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!'' Hysterical laughter from the secretary pool.
For some reason, I found it very odd to be carrying thirty odd million worth of checks in my briefcase and being told really crappy cock jokes.
Oh well, I guess we just don't have enough young men with bulging crotches and important briefcases walking around here to perve on Alex. Just your average nerdy looking animators and such.
I think it was more the biceps and crotch rather than the briefcase. Plus the nearly thirty typing pool kind of was a factor. Besides, I don't think the banking counts as an important briefcase. It was actually a pretty crappy briefcase on the grounds it was less likely to be stolen, but I think it was just a shitty briefcase.
OK thanks for clearing that up.
whats wrong with being sexy in the workplace?
Nothing swan is cranky because she eats too much ham and doesn't do enough pushups.
Personally I prefer to combat their sexual discrimination with competence. Then I get a promotion and take their jobs.
All I have to say to this is “you wish” most girls have better things to talk about/do.
Sorry I didn’t mean to shatter any immature fantasies for you but it is the truth.

What on earth are you drivelling about? This is speaking from actual experience.
Now, try again.
Note he was referring to the secretarial staff... in my experience many of them actually don't have much to do, they spend their days surfing the net!
Which would still provide more entertainment then Alex I'd imagine.
Sorry, 'than'
shazzat, no, gatherings of higher echelon professional women do the same thing, unless they're being usual females and instead of banding together are just trying to do each other over.
So badalex your one experience with girls talking about this kind of thing = All they talk about is cock.
Sounds like good science too me.
I worked for a major investment bank in the legal team and I was surrounded by 30-ish solicitors, with degrees plus professional qualifications, who spent every lunchtime poring over celebrity magazines and talking about clothes. Clearly academically smart, but complete morons just the same.
Whatever... we actually don't talk about men much at all, cos none of us are single and none of us really care to share our private lives. Plus, most of them are more interested in talking about their kids than the size of some guys penis.
But, you know... carry on.
One person’s celebrity magazine is another person’s music magazine
One person’s obsession with fashion is another person’s drooling over guitars.
Agreed. Besides, they're probably earning enough they can afford to give a fuck about fashion and can justify paying for a load of advertising dressed up as a magazine.

Yes itt really is good science isn't it? My experience with offices is that yes, the women in them tend to be a little cock obsessed. Whether this is because I've encountered more that are single, I don't know.
Nonetheless, that has been my experience.
My last manager used to confidently state that female employees were ''good for boobs, bad for work''.
I thought about reporting him, but then id start to wonder what was on the TV...
I'm pretty sure I could get my boss locked up.
The young lady bank teller told me I have sexy eyes. Is that sexist?
Personally I was flattered, said ''thank you'' & blushed.
