The thing is - the average can be equal but there's a lot of men with 50-100 sexual partners and a good number of women with 200+, and that can really skew the numbers off the scale. Men are more often sluts, but a handful of girls are kicking goals for the team. Of course, it may be skewed by the sexual activity of the world's oldest professionals...

Modi, 'average', to the broader population, does not necessarily mean 'mean', but instead means whatever is appropriate at a particular time. Thus the mode and median may also be informative about the average in this instance. In particular, the usual received wisdom is that men are more likely to have higher median/mode in regards to sexual partners.
i have had less sexual partners than every woman i have slept with. i only ever pick up bar slags who are drunk and down on their luck.

Consider the following case. Two boys and two girls go to a dance. There are two dances that night. One boy dances with both girls, the other sits out. Each girl had one dance while the boy had two. These are roughly the proportions John Watson cites from the US and UK studies on promiscuity. Boys who dance, dance more. But more girls dance. Tricky things, statistics.

However, you then take this point as confirmation that the average Joe Blow's views on promiscuous men and chaste women are incorrect. This is not correct, as the average Joe Blow's views may be more based on median/mode of promiscuity by gender, and it is unclear from the editorial whether there is any difference between median/mode amount of sexual partners by gender.
