computer help

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago  or at  7:40PM on Monday, August 6 2007 in chat

I used to be able to download wmv and avi files on my comp.

everytime I go to do that now it freezes up and I have to "end program now".

been doing so for the last couple of months.

I'm running firefox for my browser and even when I try to update that I get the same deal.

sick of going to the task manager to close down shit that used to work.

I'm not a computer person, so I'm baffled.

cheers

K.K

are you running on vista?

number_nine  said about 4 years ago:

try zapping your p-ram.

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

it's windows 2000

Goal attack  said about 4 years ago:

tried using ie instead of firefox? Firefox has been crashing heaps for me for the last three months or so.

tawedog  said about 4 years ago:

are you left clicking or right clicking then ''save as'' on the link to the media files?

if you're left clicking firefox is probably trying to display the file itself, and whatever plugin it's using is probably causing the problem.

if that's the case go to view > preferances > content tab > file types box > manage > then remove the action for avi and wmb files.

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

but for some reason Icant save wmv files in ie

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

I don't even get that far t.dog.

It freezes up then I have to 'end task'

tawedog  said about 4 years ago:

but you click on the link to a file, yeah?

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

yep

left click to download a file etc

tawedog  said about 4 years ago:

well as soon as you do that, firefox is probably trying to load a plugin to handle the file, and that's what's freezing. if you disable the plugin, it'll just ask you what to do with the file and you should be able to download it.

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

how do I disable the plug in.

I know I sound like a retard

tawedog  said about 4 years ago:

in the menu, click ''view'', then ''preferances'' - in the dialogue box that comes up go to the ''content'' tab, then in the section at the bottom labeled ''file types'' click on ''manage'' then remove the action for avi and wmv files.

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

view doesnt have preferences.

all it says is:
toolbars
staus bar
side bar
reload
increase/decreease txt size

etc

by the way I'm running firefox on this

tawedog  said about 4 years ago:

yeah sorry it's under ''edit''.

KillerKitty  said about 4 years ago:

edit doesnt have preferences either,

I tried
tools> options> downloads.

thats as far as I've worked out. tried removing avi and wmv

the trierd clicking on a wmv file and it foze again

Ah yes ok. that makes sense.

Would the shit one i bought at coles last night suffice?

I think it would.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

I think it would.

i reckon so

shakethecloudsout  said about 2 months ago:

not sure if it's still the case, but when i last checked tpg's phone network uses voip from the exchange, so services like fax aren't available on their landlines.

i'd double check with them on their forum or their timewasting helpdesk tho, cause this may have changed for certain exchanges or completely.

lotta services offer sending/receiving faxe via email for next to nothing of course, probably easier either way.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

The FAQ says they don't support Fax Duet (which means two phone numbers one the one line. one for fax, one for phone). Just having a fax machine on your home phone line doesn't cound as a 'complex' product'.

hen i last checked tpg's phone network uses voip from the exchange

i'd be surprised if the way it's trunked should have an effect. it's the equivalent of a VoIP ATA on the exchange port instead of at the customer's premises.

oops, FAQ here

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

haha oeven more oops. should have read further.

2.7 Once ADSL2+ with Home Phone is installed, are there any services that will not work on my line?
Yes, the following services will not operate on your ADSL2+ with Home Phone line:
– Fax machines
– EFPOS
– PABX
– 56K Dial up modem
– Digital Pay TV (e.g.Foxtel) will still be ok however services like voting or purchasing box office movies
will not work

anyone have any recommendations for a program i can use that will best sync things between my home desktop, work desktop and phone? i'm mainly thinking music here (because i lost the computer cable for my bloody phone)

dropbox isn't cutting it - i guess its designed more for documents.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

something like icloud?

woolfat  said about 2 months ago:

anonymous  said about 2 months ago:

amazon has a music cloud thing as well doesn't it?

woolfat  said about 2 months ago:

icloud seems to be for mac users, no?

i have an android and don't use itunes..

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

icloud seems to be for mac users, no?

yep. I did say like... i don't know what else is out there.

this is the amazon thing anonymous was talking about, but it seems pretty dropbox-y to me.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

what about dropbox doesn't cut it for you?

woolfat  said about 2 months ago:

it seems to take forever to sync and sometimes i have problems opening files. i'd rather a music player/sync set up...

will have a hunt about.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

google music might be the closest thing...don't think it's available here though.

i reckon if there's a music-specific service it would likely be tied into buying from some online store (as the google one seems to be)

tinyman  said 4 days ago:

I got a movie on a 4.7GB dvd. rip it onto my computer and it says 1.9GB mp4 file. I want to burn it back into a DVD and the computer program says needs to convert to mpg. fine. whatever. converts. now it's a 5.2GB mpg and won't fit on the blank dvds I got.

Aside from being dumb with computers, where did I go wrong??

anonymous  said 4 days ago:

if you have the dvd still you could just make a iso copy of it.

tinyman  said 4 days ago:

do go on. i'm on a mac and just realise I've never needed to make a dvd (copy) before. I may have never burnt a dvd. this packet of blank dvds came with a tv recorder and hasn't been touched in years.
