how about leaving the house and walking as far as you can by one o'clock. when it reaches one o'clock turn around and walk home.

You didn't sleep, so you could adjust back to business hours? So shouldn't you have gone to sleep around 10:30 and woken up around 7?
how are you going to fill up your day, mountainman?

Tramdriver a couple of things have worked for me lately- since i gave up my joint before bed!
it's borrowed mostly from the usual tips you get, but trying mostly to go to bed around the same time each night - and not unrealistically early either - also keeping the same routine before bed;
being vigilant about not thinking about work or anything that is particularly bugging me;
also not getting worried if it takes a while, not checking the time relentlessly just letting the time pass daydreaming about something pleasant
the patience and the thought police was the hardest for me, but i may have it down now
Cheers will give the chamomile a go, but what about reading? Or music for that matter. Probably not a good idea either. I guess the idea is to be board(sic) before you go to bed. :-/
babysteps - thanx for that. I think I have the same problems you did- at night beforeI go to bed is when it all come flooding back. Also, checking the time relentlessly- good idea not to have a clock handy.
yeah that's not always easy but i've just made a rule for myself so that when thoughts stray in that direction i have to turn it off.
i'm not usually a fan of music playing while i'm sleeping but for a while i had Kind of Blue as part of the pre-sleep routine, i'd listen to the last track each night in bed and i'd often get to the end of it but would fall asleep soon after
i really can't do tv or books though
Get Dances With Wolves on DVD.
Get Waterworld on DVD
Get The English Patient on DVD
i find reading works well. i tend to wake up in the small hours with my mind racing rather than having trouble getting to sleep.
reading helps to distract me from whatever i'm panicking about and the resultant panic about not sleeping and resets my brain so i can sleep again. don't just lie there tossing and turning.
get the iceman cometh on dvd. you'll be fast asleep before the 239th minute.
mm is the only person i know that can a carry an articulate conversation all night, eloquently punctuating and emphasising his witty anecdotes with short power naps.
baby- I might listen to a CD with the lights off before I sleep- will give that a go tonight.
louis - that might not be a bad idea, but was told not to read in bed, or anything else really- just keep it for sleeping.
I get this quite often also. I've noticed one trigger for it is being too hot. Might be my mind's way of telling me to get up and take some blankets off.
i've always heard the theory that your bed should be only for sex and sleep, but i love my bed so much that i would quite happily conduct my life from bed in my jarmies and never leave the house.
de.foxus - Yeah I think it is so as soon as you are in bed you are in sleep mode (or secksing mode).
reading would be really good for getting your mind off daily crap... unless you go straight back to them once the lights are out
for me though, i don't get that moment of 'i'm now tired so i should put this down/turn off the tv and go to sleep now''. If the book is good i am likely to just keep on reading and suddenly it's 4am
i do love my bed too... but its more about the morning sleep-ins, in the evenings we simply have a gentlemen's accord.
My mind sometimes races about the book and other stuff that follows on from it.
i've been known to fall asleep with my book on my face. if i get to the point where i'm that tired no book in the world's going to keep me awake.
I think I need some things to get up for in the mornings perhaps as well.
oh i tried all the secrets, nurofen, shower, cup of tea. What are my options? now its 10am.....cricket in 1/2 hour for a good sleep?
