Fitzroy Reds vs South Melbourne
10th May
Brunswick Street Oval
Part of the VAFA “Rivalry Round” Celebrations
South Melbourne and Fitzroy may not have a huge history in the VAFA, but when it comes to the history of Aussie Rules Football, the tradition runs long and proud. This weekend, the AFL officially celebrates the 150th anniversary of Aussie Rules, and along with the South Melbourne District Football Club, we at the Reds are doing our bit to celebrate the proud history of local footy. These two famous jumpers will go head-to-head in what has turned out to be a vital clash in D1. Should we beat the Districts, we will put a two game buffer between us and them, and also keep up with the runaway leaders of Bulleen, and North Old Boys. The Fitzroy Reds will be wearing a one-off maroon Heritage Guernsey made famous by the Fitzroy Lions of yesteryear, and the game will be being played for the Bill Stephen / Peter Bedford Cup, both champions of their respective VFL Clubs.
A special luncheon is being held next door at the Fitzroy Victoria Bowls Club to commemorate the day, with guest speakers from both Fitzroy and South Melbourne VFL clubs. For information on the lunch, and any last minute bookings, please visit http://www.fitzroyreds.com.au/Images/LunchFlyer.pdf
The day will also see a very rare triple header at Brunswick Street, with the Thirds kicking off the day, and the dew, at 9.20am against University Blacks. For those footy tragics out there, this will mean that every team playing on the day will have a connection of some sort with a former VFL team. University Blacks being the former, short lived “University” team which played in the VFL back in the 20s. This would have to be a first for the VAFA.
The Reserves then follow up at 11:40am. Fraser’s men are currently undefeated, and high atop the ladder, but have their feet firmly on the ground knowing they have only played sides in the bottom part of the ladder. This will be another good test, with South Melbourne improving every week.
The Seniors then battle it out at 2:00pm
Get along to what should be a wonderful day of local footy, and hopefully three wins to the Reds.
I don't like South melbourne, they had this thing where they found it necessary to knock me out everytime I played them, generally off the ball....but I had sweet victory by beating them in a Grand Final...
nice. who'd you play for?
end up playing this season?
i can't wait to get out there at 9.20am, and then have the rest of the day to enjoy the festivities at brunny oval.
Played for St Johns, think it was either D2 or D3..cant quite remember...It got to a stage against them I started wearing a cricket box..unruly bastards..
9.20..gee, thats back to midget days.
Didnt end up playing and am regretting it, time just isn't on my side so far this year..maybe next year
Might even head down, havent seen a local game of fotty for a while
well, just had 1st practice match this morning.
feeling sorer than i thought i would (regardless of killer hangover). team looks fun this year, so again, if anyone wants to have a run at Fitzroy, check the website for training details. Games start in 2 weeks.
first game for the season. whilst this thread could just turn into a personal twitter, would love to hear about any other chats who are playing footy this year.
very sore again after throwing myself around for the Fitzroy Football Club. Blood was spilled, and so were a shitload of marks. Fun was the winner. Well, the other team were too.
good stuff gabbo, keep us posted on how the season goes.
playing in the ruck tomorrow. never done it before. will be bringing my shinpads!
Oh shit that's funny. So tempted to come and watch.
only rucked when lazy as fuck ruckmen couldn't make it to the throw ins, hated it, really tough gig especially if you don't have a great leap (me) on you, good luck gabbo.
good luck, worst position on the ground in my opinion
i have a good leap and long arms, but not much spatial awareness (hence the need for shinpads) - i'm the Kosi of our team.
so i rucked on the weekend. won most centre hitouts (and most to advantage) but was rubbish around the ground.
then sprained my ankle badly in the third quarter.
out for 2-4 weeks now.
bugger.
I accidentally ended up at Peanut Park this morning, in time to see a couple of St Kilda City teams play. I really enjoyed it! It's a shame I usually work on the weekends, cos I used to love going to watch the local country teams play when I was a kid.
There are some more photos here if anyone's interested..
not interested. footy is for boneheads, and pretty much all victorians. nice insular way of life you have down there. ha. a world awaits you if you'd get your head out of your collective, neanderthal, ass.
hope your knitting is keeping you busy willus.
that looks like East Sandy.
I haven't played in 8 weeks now due to that sprained ankle.
i fucked it good.
sprained ankles take forever to get over.
I'm about to head down to the footy oval to watch the two local Hamilton teams battle it out. Go Imps!
