I've only got hanging garden and the boys. I think the boys is an incredible album. It is about the only album I've heard which is concurrently emotionally, psychologically and intellectually engaging.
soon I'll buy more of their albums.
i love
mosquito
and
aether
and
drive-by
and
sex
all about the same amount
I'm an idiot and have none of their albums.
Seen them live a couple of times, and they're amazing.
live they are at times mystical.
i love some of the records, but some you think they may have just recorded the wrong performance.
they're pretty special live. I also saw the drummer do a solo gig at the hoey a few months ago. That was amazing.
tony buck. genius.
monty, I was disappointed that when you reviewed us you mentioned the Manzarek but not the Abrahams (that shimmery many keys at once thing I ripped straight off the Necks).
Hillsong, me want listen to the Abrahams-influenced number.
Luke, if you like Hanging Gardens, you should like Drive By, and the tracks on Chemist (which is genius). Also awesome are Aether (incredibly minimalist, but builds into this pulsing monster, incredible!), Mosquito, and yeah Sex is always one to come back to...
only had 450 words, hillsong - the stuff i had to leave out about you guys, i was ruthless in my editing!
i loves abrahams...and the fact he apparently worte some of the little choons the pokies play when you get a winning roll...
No wonder Timmy Freedman wants to blow 'em up - professional jealousy! He knows Chris is a far better musician than him.
Mind you, they did some nice gigs together as the Moody Jews once upon a time, I recall... And anyway he stole that song from my pal Greta Gertler. So... back to Chris Abrahams and enough about Tim F.
i certainly didnt bring freedman up, rave. i think the problems all yours!
Those damn pokies...
so, no whits tunes in the fourplay setlist in the foreseeable future then?
hehehehehehehehehehehehehchoke
Maybe we'll do a cover of ''Dwell'' by Peccadillo.
I've been wanting to listen to some necks for a while. Is there a good place to start?
I would say go to a live gig, but that's useless... The four CD live set has some great stuff, but if you're going to purchase just one thing, it's a hard one - but you could ease yourself into the ''single slowly-evolving one hour track'' vibe that characterises most of their work with the new album, Chemist, which is three shorter tracks (each around 20 mins), but has an indication of their vibe on record.
Hanging Gardens is stunning, but fairly different - it's like live drum'n'bass meets ''In A Silent Way'' meets, well, The Necks. And Drive By has a really nice Krautrock drive to it... of sorts.
Sex, their first album, is really minimalist - it doesn't evolve in the way their live stuff, or most albums, do. But it's beautiful.
Seriously, they are really quite varied on record, so you almost have to take a punt, but there's some descriptions for ya.
thanks raven that's enough to give me an idea... and get the topic back on track :) wonder if they ever play in london...
They tour constantly. Wire Magazine wrote them up a while back when somebody overseas finally released one of their albums, and they became instant cult heroes. Tony Buck (drummer) lives in Berlin much of the time, so I'm pretty sure they play in Europe every year...
Erm, except: Due to family commitments, The Necks will unfortunately not be undertaking extended overseas tours for the immediate future.
But keep an eye on that (linked) page I guess.
youre a veritable information service, rave.

tonight, tomorrow night and wednesday night at the corner.
show tony and the boys a bit of love.
any sydney shows? no?
they're playing at the MCA in february and the riverside theatre in parramatta also in february and at the factory theatre in march sometime
and then i seem to remember reading that they have 4 shows booked at the studio in the opera house in may which would be totally fucking amazing if true - i have long wanted to see what they were like in a ''formal'' concert space
yay
anyone go last night?
anyone going tonight?
I am loving Chemist at the moment - truly amazing stuff. And seeing them at the Sydney Festival last year was short, but intense - I couldn't have taken more. I'm looking forward to this new thing they've got going from March at the Factory.
Yes bxc... I'll be there tonight.
seeya then pooza.
ps: loved your conspiracy theory in sticky carpet (just saw it over the holidays).

saw them last night. i think it was the best i've ever seen them. really enjoyed it. i do wish they would play somewhere else for a change.
good show. particularly liked the 2nd set.
May shows at the Studio onsale now - link here.
yeah i actually meant the 2nd set. sensational.
2 sets of orsums last night.
i finally saw them last week in perth! it was so gobsmackingly good. anyone caught any of the other shows?
i'm going to see them at the street theatre at anu on tuesday night hopefully.
The best Necks sets are when Abrahams hits trill and spill pattern, then flurry is beyond my scope but still sensual enough to tap.
so who's going to the Sydney show at Factory next week?
