Torchwood - Doctor Who spin-off

HEB  said about 2 years ago  or at  10:57PM on Saturday, July 22 2006.

Torchwood is a 13-part drama series aimed at a post-watershed audience and has an organic link to Doctor Who.

"Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humour," says Russell T Davies. "It's dark, wild and sexy, it's The X Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences which will have its own unique identity.

"I have just begun working on the scripts with a team of writers and cannot wait to see the results."

Set in modern-day Cardiff, Torchwood stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack from Doctor Who; it's in the Christmas special and second series of Doctor Who that the story of Torchwood – a renegade group of investigators – is seeded.

However, no stories will cross over between Torchwood and Doctor Who.

HEB  said about 2 years ago:

Indeed.
It was commissioned in 1879 by Queen Victoria. See here

But the Rift [see The Unquiet Dead and Boom Town in Season 1] is in Cardiff.

The reason for the London branch will be made clear as the story unfolds...

Torchwood

Torchwood follows the adventures of a team of investigators as they use alien technology to solve crimes, both alien and human.

This new British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home.

The cast includes John Barrowman (Doctor Who) as the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the ever-watchful heart of the team guarding against the fragility of humankind.

Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Belonging) plays Gwen Cooper, initially an outsider whose first encounter with Torchwood sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth and throws her into an unfamiliar but exciting world.

Burn Gorman (Bleak House) plays the raw but charming medic, Owen Harper, and Naoko Mori (Doctor Who, Absolutely Fabulous) is Toshiko Sato, the team member who specialises in all things technical.

Torchwood is written by Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, with contributing writers including PJ Hammond, Toby Whithouse and Helen Raynor.

Purported Broadcast dates
Episode 1 to be broadcast simultaneously on BBC One and BBC Three at 21.00 on Sunday 21 October 2006.
Episode 2 then immediately follows on BBC Three.

On all following weeks, the episode on BBC One at 21.00 will be followed by the next episode on BBC Three so that BBC Three is one week ahead of BBC One for the whole run...

HEB  said about 2 years ago:

BBC1 is now running two second teaser trails of the Torchwood logo.

BBC Three had a long trailer last night - but I was in the pub doing a quiz and the volume on the set was down

I'm okay with that. He's Jim Robinson, he can do what he likes.

Plus that lead is rubbish.

Series 3 confirmed

16 June 2008
BBC

Julie Gardner has confirmed that a third series of Torchwood has been commissioned and that it will be unlike anything we have seen before!

Not only will the series air on BBC One, Torchwood will have a brand new format. The series will consist of just one continuous story, delivered over 5 consecutive nights.

That's not the only thing that will be new about the series - Torchwood will have a brand new producer, Peter Bennett, who has previously worked on Torchwood and on Doctor Who as well as 'The Mummy', 'A View to a Kill' and 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'. Euros Lyn will also join the team as Director. Euros has directed several Doctor Who episodes including the 'Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead' two-part story from the current series.

And just to add to the excitement, the show will boast some new arrivals in the cast as well...

Julie Gardner says that she and Russell T Davies ''are thrilled to be bringing Torchwood back for a third series. The new series promises to be a gripping and surprising TV event and we're certain the audience will love the team's exciting, roller-coaster adventures.''

Production on the new series will start in August.

This sounds dumb to me.

Perfect for Torchwood, then!

nyx  said about 5 months ago:

zing!

Modi  said about 5 months ago:

So Torchwood is going to be more like the old school Doctor Who, while Doctor Who is more like every other TV show. Weird.

asbestos  said about 5 months ago:

bored by the notion that M & M will probably be in it

__v  said about 5 months ago:

What's M&M?

asbestos  said about 5 months ago:

erm, it's a bit spoiler-y for those who haven't seen the end of Dr Who season 4. Two slightly lame Who characters.

__v  said about 5 months ago:

Ah, I see. One of them was in Torchwood S2, wasn't she?

asbestos  said about 5 months ago:

correct! I guess she was always slated to come back.
