Question for the ladies - your hairdresser?

Manhattan  said about 2 years ago  or at  12:58PM on Tuesday, June 26 2007.

Hello ladies,

If you've seen me lately, you probably know I'm in desperate need of a haircut. Question is, because I've only had friends cut my hair for the last 4 years, I have no idea who I should go to. If you know someone Northside (Melbs), around Fitzroy/Collingwood or surrounds who is not overly expensive and has a knack for knowing exactly what will suit you, can you please share your secret here? Last time I took a punt, I went to Heading out, paid $300, and hated the cut.

General hair talk and photos welcome, if you feel like being girly. I know I do.

Little buddha on smith are rad. Not cheap but you can have a normal person conversation with them instead of some trumped up overexuberant personality pitch.

nyx  said about 2 years ago:

I have a great hairdresser who always knows just how to cut my hair but is not too bossy.
You tell him vaguely how to do your hair, he tells you what will suit you, you argue briefly then he cuts something in between that ends up awesome. In South Melbourne though.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

Kon at Slinky in Gertrude Street. Lainey goes there - I copied off her.

Reasonably priced too.

Manhattan  said about 2 years ago:

Is Sveltes happy with her hair?! I want fringe. I need someone who does a great fringe.

666er, the dirty jokes don't have to be relevant...

svelteslacks  said about 2 years ago:

what rach said. i fucking love my hairdresser.

svelteslacks  said about 2 years ago:

i am really really fussy with hairdressers manhattan and have nothing but love for the girl who does mine.

Mo  said about 2 years ago:

$300 thats freakin highway robbery

too bad u aint in sydney

was talkin about this with my lady the other night

cause she always has very satisfied customers

the key is to very accurately describe what u want

why lee does well is because she really tries to get into what they want - how its gonna work for them etc

but also telling people when their ideas wont work

littlearch  said about 2 years ago:

i love this girl. first hairdresser in years that i've actually liked and she does a great job on my hair

Hatty, i've sent you a link via email

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

$300?

Did she give you gold hair?

filterfeed  said about 2 years ago:

i went to svelte and rach's hairdresser because my hairdresser moved to toorak and i needed one that day - never been more depressed about hair situation in all my life. utter crap and not worth it.

just being honest.

Gertrude St sounds handy. Price is important, too. Does this Kon person have a real flair, postergirl? I hate explaining what I want and then getting something completely different.

shineslikerubies  said about 2 years ago:

i guess all i would say is find somewhere where you feel good and comfortable, and where you can develop a relationship with your hairdresser(s). i found my salon a few years ago (not melbourne), and even though some hairdressers i have loved have moved on, i know that the girls there will always look after me, and if i am not happy will fix things up so that i am. it's all about relationship building, i reckon. there are always times when you will get a crappy cut, but if you have a good relationship with them, that can be fixed really easily.

bergholt  said about 2 years ago:

Brad at Prophecy on Smith St is excellent. And pretty hot, too. My sisters and two ex-girlfriends go to him. As do I. But I'm a guy so unqualified to have an opinion.

i agree with this. tom cuts my hair (can PM you the number if you need), and does a bloody great job. he actually does himself out of repeat business though, cos whenever he cuts it i don't need to go back for three months or more.

though i sent eep! to him and she was less impressed. mainly because he told her to throw out her hair straightener and to only wash her hair every second day.

selttiks  said about 2 years ago:

i like the one rach & sveltes go to. she be good.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

Kon totally gets it, Manhattan. Even if you go in and you're not quite sure what you want, he'll still give you a cut that really suits you.

I used to go to a guy called Eddie at Mioche in Block Place. He's a lovely guy and a great hairdresser, but his haircuts can sometimes be a bit conservative.

i really want to give that degraves person a try... but i keep forgetting

tokes cut my hair last time and did such a great job i just let it grow out for three months

and it got better as it grew out

until it got too long again...

such is life

God I love the head massages they give you when they're washing your hair. They almost make me a bit, er …

Manhattan  said about 1 month ago:

That young dude did my head massage. I told him how good it was, then felt compelled to get a half hour chinese massage on the way home.

My hair is seriously fluffy today. Feels like a big fur hat.

postergirl  said about 1 month ago:

Lewis? He did me too. Yep – he is ruddy good at it.

Manhattan  said about 1 month ago:

I'd had him picked as a Michael.

postergirl  said about 1 month ago:

Haha. He called me ''love'' when I first walked in. I'm probably about 15 years older than him. Anyway, I showed him who was boss, in the end.

Manhattan  said about 1 month ago:

The best thing I've experienced (and I do slightly exaggerate) is an ear rub from a day spa massage therapist. I wish they did that at the hairdressers, too.

postergirl  said about 1 month ago:

Yes, I imagine that would be divine, given that the ear is a highly sensitive area.

I'm new to this forum but really need a hair cut (troublesome curly hair). If anyone has Tom on Smith Street's contact details, please message me! Appreciated...

Lilo  said 17 days ago:

I miss my Hobart hairdresser. I need a cut and colour, stat, but I don't know where to go. I went to Avia on Elgin St last time, and it was a bit meh.

Somewhere in Carlton/North Carlton/Northcote/Brunswick etc... any ideas? There's a couple of places on Lygon St that look interesting...

de.foxus  said 17 days ago:

if you can afford (a little bit) le pricey, i can't recommend tom enough.

lemme know if you want the details.

pagey  said 17 days ago:

you should go to my hairdresser lilo. she's ace, has a private studio in collingwood, makes a mean cup of tea and has two gorgeous kitties named javier and bruce.

de.foxus  said 17 days ago:

i just realised that i've had a longer relationship with my hairdresser than i have with anyone in a romantic sense.

mrsjackwhite  said 17 days ago:

I get around that by sleeping with mine....

Lilo  said 17 days ago:

That's how I feel about my hairdresser, de'fox. I even dreamt about her the other night.

Part of me thinks, ''fuck it, I'll just go down to Hobart for a couple of days,'' but the expense makes me shudder.

Lilo  said 16 days ago:

I found my hairdresser on Facebook. Should I be all stalkerish and add her?

spin doctor  said 9 days ago:

Thanks to everyone on here who recommended Tom - he is amazing! A keeper for sure. The first person who has cut my hair in context.

svelteslacks  said 9 days ago:

tom is the master.

Lilo  said 9 days ago:

how does one cut hair ''in context''?

de.foxus  said 9 days ago:

he cuts it dry and dirty in the way it normally falls, then he washes it and dries it and tidies it up.

he'll also make you stand up and he'll cut while you're like that because it's the way it naturally falls, rather than fanned out over your shoulders and over the robe.

nyx  said 9 days ago:

TOM! Made of win. I need to go back soon.
