Hello ladies,
If you've seen me lately, you probably know I'm in desperate need of a haircut. Question is, because I've only had friends cut my hair for the last 4 years, I have no idea who I should go to. If you know someone Northside (Melbs), around Fitzroy/Collingwood or surrounds who is not overly expensive and has a knack for knowing exactly what will suit you, can you please share your secret here? Last time I took a punt, I went to Heading out, paid $300, and hated the cut.
General hair talk and photos welcome, if you feel like being girly. I know I do.

awww, I can't even sully this thread with dirty jokes.
ha me and sveltes go to the same girl in degraves lane, if yr intersted, hatty
Little buddha on smith are rad. Not cheap but you can have a normal person conversation with them instead of some trumped up overexuberant personality pitch.
I have a great hairdresser who always knows just how to cut my hair but is not too bossy.
You tell him vaguely how to do your hair, he tells you what will suit you, you argue briefly then he cuts something in between that ends up awesome.
In South Melbourne though.
Kon at Slinky in Gertrude Street. Lainey goes there - I copied off her.
Reasonably priced too.
Is Sveltes happy with her hair?! I want fringe. I need someone who does a great fringe.
666er, the dirty jokes don't have to be relevant...
what rach said. i fucking love my hairdresser.
i am really really fussy with hairdressers manhattan and have nothing but love for the girl who does mine.
$300 thats freakin highway robbery
too bad u aint in sydney
was talkin about this with my lady the other night
cause she always has very satisfied customers
the key is to very accurately describe what u want
why lee does well is because she really tries to get into what they want - how its gonna work for them etc
but also telling people when their ideas wont work
i love this girl. first hairdresser in years that i've actually liked and she does a great job on my hair
Hatty, i've sent you a link via email
$300?
Did she give you gold hair?
i went to svelte and rach's hairdresser because my hairdresser moved to toorak and i needed one that day - never been more depressed about hair situation in all my life. utter crap and not worth it.
just being honest.
Gertrude St sounds handy. Price is important, too. Does this Kon person have a real flair, postergirl? I hate explaining what I want and then getting something completely different.
barberella on gertrude is good

i guess all i would say is find somewhere where you feel good and comfortable, and where you can develop a relationship with your hairdresser(s). i found my salon a few years ago (not melbourne), and even though some hairdressers i have loved have moved on, i know that the girls there will always look after me, and if i am not happy will fix things up so that i am. it's all about relationship building, i reckon. there are always times when you will get a crappy cut, but if you have a good relationship with them, that can be fixed really easily.
Brad at Prophecy on Smith St is excellent. And pretty hot, too. My sisters and two ex-girlfriends go to him. As do I. But I'm a guy so unqualified to have an opinion.
Little buddha on smith are rad. Not cheap but you can have a normal person conversation with them instead of some trumped up overexuberant personality pitch.
i agree with this. tom cuts my hair (can PM you the number if you need), and does a bloody great job. he actually does himself out of repeat business though, cos whenever he cuts it i don't need to go back for three months or more.
though i sent eep! to him and she was less impressed. mainly because he told her to throw out her hair straightener and to only wash her hair every second day.
i like the one rach & sveltes go to. she be good.
Kon totally gets it, Manhattan. Even if you go in and you're not quite sure what you want, he'll still give you a cut that really suits you.
I used to go to a guy called Eddie at Mioche in Block Place. He's a lovely guy and a great hairdresser, but his haircuts can sometimes be a bit conservative.
i really want to give that degraves person a try... but i keep forgetting
tokes cut my hair last time and did such a great job i just let it grow out for three months
and it got better as it grew out
until it got too long again...
such is life

Can I ask what is probably a dumb question, but if you are trying to grow your hair out, how often should you be getting it trimmed?
I also reccommend Sweet Caroline - it's a hike from our end of town but I find it worth it. I see ''Stef'', he is just wonderful, for both cuts and colour in particular. A perfectionist.
Can totally recommend Amanda at Cream on Johnston St - she's amazing for cut and colour - she is down to earth and easy to talk to, and she managed to cut my hair (which is long and fine and wavy/curly/ringletty) into a beautiful mane, which has grown out gorgously over the last 3 months (I still get compliments and I'm sooooo overdue for another cut). Not inexpensive - but not outrageously expensive either. Just had a chat with me about what I wanted (low maintenance - I'm vain and want it to look good but totally lazy and won't do anything to it but wash it once or twice a week) then got busy and told me if I wasn't satisfied with how it was sitting and stuff in a week or two to come back and she'd give it any tweaks it needed. It needed no tweaking. Amazing hairdresser.
whoa - sweet caroline isn't cheap is it. Hmmm
jilli is brilliant, but shes away for a while. I can highly recommend her though!
can someone please pm me tom's details? my hairdresser is overseas, and in hair is in desperate need for cut & colour..much appreciated
Help a lady out...my hairdresser is away and I need a cut. Desperately. Northside please!
anyone??
bump. help a lady out.
i need someone to cut my hair this weekend. price isn't a huge issue, although i want someone who's going to take the initiative to give me an interesting cut - not after a boring stylist.
What about J? :-D she's back.
she's great, but i need someone i can get an appointment with.
bump bump
Hi Woolfat - if your'e willing to head across the river I can't recommend Jamie from sweet caroline enough. not cheap but pretty awesome.
heading across the river is fine! how much are we looking at for a restyle? (i don't dye my hair so dont have to worry about that)
http://www.sweetcaroline.com.au/
contact them and ask
it's okay - just checked the website.
you could try little buddha in n.fitz - look them up on f4cebook for contact details if you don't have them. saya is really good. but they're often booked out for weekends.
i ended up going with zedi in moor street... i like the cuts they had on their site & that they use products on the more natural end of the scale, plus their pricing suits my budget a little more than sweet caroline (however if i were in the money i would definitely try it out)
.. will let you know how i go.
i've been to little buddha before. lest just say that i don't enjoy coming out of a cut looking like mike's clone. which happened on more than one occasion. i haven't been to saya though.
hey ladies, I need a hairdresser to trim my fringe sometime in the next couple of days (usual guy is booked up). Preferably around the south end of the CBD. Doesn't need to be absolutely perfect but I've had a few botch jobs on my fringe so I'm nervous.
Recommendations gratefully accepted.
Cherrybomb in Smith St (south of Gertrude) did mine the other day - dry hair, no fussing, el-cheapo too. The guy there seems pretty casual/cool, not posey. It wasn't the most precision accurate cut I've ever had, but it certainly served the purpose of stopping me resembling that Warner Brothers cartoon sheepdog Sam at the timeclock machine.
