Becoming a vegetarian

Who's done it? Did you find it hard to adjust your diet? Did you feel healthier?

Share your stories with me.

i'm a vegetarian..

i mean for some people its a good excuse for not going down on a woman.

but i don't mind it, so yeh, being vegetarian could mean your not going to get herpes

littlesmoke  said about 1 year ago:

Smoke Jr has done it. We had to learn a little about a suitable diet for him, although now he's eating healthier than ever. I'm pretty sure he is healthier as a result.

Modi  said about 1 year ago:

I did for fifteen years

I didn't adjust my diet, I just didn't eat the dishes that had meat in them, I ate the ones that didn't

I was a beer swilling, bong smoking, mushroom scoffing, acid dropping 17 year old.

I felt better when I stopped acting like an idiot. Nothing to do with my diet.

AlterEgo  said about 1 year ago:

yes, no, not really - especially all those processed soy products, like burgers from the supermarket freezer. high in fat.

shineslikerubies  said about 1 year ago:

i'm a mostly vego - don't eat meat of my own volition, but will eat it if others cook it for me. i feel healthy when i eat lots of vegies and things, but i can still eat crap and feel crap even when eating vego.

it's not that hard except when you eat out at some places when choice is limited.

nicko_mcbrain  said about 1 year ago:

yes, no, yes - in some ways. mental accuity sharper, physically not a whole heap of difference, really. put on less weght and just generally felt more energetic because i was getting all my nutritional requirements met without a lot of crap. meat's not bad for you, just more taxing on your system and producing more waste/by-products that hang out in your body too long. veg diet is more efficient for your life.

meat's pretty fucked for the animals, though.

the power of 666  said about 1 year ago:

I've never been a 'vegetarian', but I went several years barely eating meat due to vegetarian girlfriends. It's all the same, good food is good food.

''meat's pretty fucked for the animals, though.''

That's really the reason I'm considering it. Not so much dietary.

Aside from inconvenience I think it will be good for me. Thanks for the deets, peeps.

Inactivist  said about 1 year ago:

Question for vegetarians:

Did deciding to be a vegetarian mean that you put way more effort into preparing food?

nicko_mcbrain  said about 1 year ago:

only one tip: watch the cheese-as-meat substitute phenomenon; one way ticket to weight gain, and be wary of carb loading. complex carbs are great, but if you substitute (even in basic volume terms) for the place where meat once was on your plate, and you don't get any more active - possibly the same result.

nicko_mcbrain  said about 1 year ago:

um, so two tips.

Modi  said about 1 year ago:

Nah, Inacty, I always liked cooking.

I think if killing animals is morally the same as killing people, then killing people shouldn't be a crime at all.

Seriously, everything dies, would you rather die quickly or die of ''natural causes'' with no palliative care?

gusseting  said about 1 year ago:

yes (except for the odd chunk of salami or something now and then), no - gradual, and when i had cravings for red meat w/black bean sauce or chicken, i'll just have it every month or so, yes - healthier. i've got a juicer now, and that first thing in the morning shot of vegie goodness is gold.

empra  said about 1 year ago:

yes, no, no.

I ended up getting to the point where I couldn't even eat chicken chips. It felt extremely satisfying to know that I saved at least one cow in the three years I didn't eat meat. I loved it and I'm going to do it again one day.

Too many other things to give up first....

I was a veggie for 5 years when I was a teenager and jacked it all in one day for a McDonalds quarter pounder...

I rarely eat the latter these days but I have to me honest – I love meat... although you can't get a decent sausage in Australia - or bacon. Christ what I'd give for a packet of Superquinn sausages...(Irish brand) Drooling

Hello thread,

I am having trouble with iron levels and I don't like taking the supplements.

Can anyone advise any alternatives?

nyx: Spinach? Do you eat fish?

nyx  said about 11 months ago:

Meat?

OMG why didn't I think of this! Of course.

socks, I am not sure that I could consume the amount of spinach required to get my iron levels back to respectable. And did eat fish last year but not anymore.

emmy hennings  said about 11 months ago:

Dried apricots. Sesame seeds in every form, including tahini. Almonds (also good for calcium). Broccoli. There's lots of iron in food you wouldn't necessarily expect.

I've been vegan for four years and I was vegetarian before that, and I ain't never had a problem with my iron levels. Then again, supplements aren't the end of the world.

jevus  said about 11 months ago:

lol mock meats are horrible. and most of its bad for you..

think I'm happy with being at the top of the food chain until it gets better.

socks  said about 11 months ago:

Maybe you could eat more beans and wholegrain foods. Tofu's also a good source, if you like the taste of it. Potato skins too! And chickpeas. Any of those sound appealing?

Hooray! I like all of these! Thanks emmy.

Modi  said about 11 months ago:

Highest source of vegetable iron are sunflower and pumpkin seeds according to my research (years ago). I never had an iron deficiency when I was vego, but then, I'm a boy, so I'm tuff.

Worst thing about iron tabs are the constipatory effects.

AlterEgo  said about 11 months ago:

i never had iron problems when i was vegetarian either. must suck.

nyx  said about 11 months ago:

It really does.

Obviously I am not doing a good job because my levels were way down and it was causing some problems with extreme tiredness and arrythmia and the likes which was not so fun.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Modi  said about 11 months ago:

I just used to eat a leopard tank every couple of months SORTED.

emmy hennings  said about 11 months ago:

I eat sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds by the spoonful. Maybe that accounts for my respectable iron levels over the years. Mmmmmm, chickpeas. Mmmmmm, tofu...

emmy hennings  said about 11 months ago:

I feel for ya nyx, I ended up with really low vitamin B12 levels last year, perhaps partially caused by diet (you only get B12 from dairy and meat), and the fatigue was horrible.

moo-core  said about 11 months ago:

Nah, you can get B12 from tempeh and other fermented things. Although it won't necesarily cover your needs.

I really need to work on eating healthier. Vegetarianism has nothing to do with it for me though. I probably ate worse and got less nutrients when I ate meat, than as a vego.

moo-core  said about 10 months ago:

Ok. So we have a myspaz up for Las Vegan. For those who care!
